It depends on the type of suspension you have. If you have an all strap suspension, then it is a must to have a connector. That could be a climbing rated carabiner or a Dutch clip. Which one would you want to carry for miles in a backpack?
If you have removeable straps in combination with something like whoopie slings, you don't need any connector. Just thread one end of your strap through the looped end. However, lets say you need to raise or lower the strap after initial setup, but there are branches in the way of doing that. You must un-thread and re-thread the straps. With Dutch clips, you simply unclip, move the strap, and re-clip! Nice and convenient.
