I usually set the tarp up with so that the 10 ft lengths are on the side of the tarp that I plan to open in porch mode. They give more options to tie out the tarp with. The 4 footers go on the low side. I do have to pay attention when setting up the tarp, but the guy lines are only larksheaded on the the d-rings so I can move them around if needed.

my tarp is an OES MacCat Standard (hex, ish. 6 corners.) The head and foot lengths are about 8', iirc. The one differencs with jwright's setup is that one of my 'porch' tieouts is a piece of kelty triptease lightline.
I use a clove hitch on the two porch "posts" (usually 6'-7' sticks). if it rains, i can just lean out (way out) and pull the bottoms in under me. the weight of the sticks keeps that side of the tarp down pretty tight, even during storm, and best of all, i don't have to go out in the rain to re-tie anything.
