    Kayak Camping

Ok here is my issue. I really enjoy sleeping in a hammock. For kayak river camping trips they are easy to pack and eliminates the need to haul a both a tent and a pad. The problem is when you camp on islands in the river bed you don't know what you can expect. Could have no trees, maybe a sand or gravel bar, etc. Again with kayak camping you are trying to limit weight. I would like to just carry a hammock but be ready to go to the ground. The ideal setup would be a self suspension rig that could pack in the kayak for those places with no trees and large rocks. Am I dreaming of a perfect world?

I haven't seen any kind of "hammock stand" that would be light enough or small enough to fit in a kayak... Seems kind of like a pipe-dream lol. My philosophy would be ... keep moving ... there is likely to be a sandbar or suitable trees farther down the river!

    Just my 2 cents!

Hi nrcspm, Welcome to the forum.
We have a kayak/canoe hammock folder but it is in the donating members area.
In Colorado and UT where I boat there are no trees so I just bring my tent.

There's a collapsible stand sold out of the UK called HandyHammock. There are posts about it in HF and you can google it. I'm a kayak camper too had have to be ready to "go to ground". So even though I use an UQ, I still carry a folded Therm-a-rest and I have some foam (think large seat pad) in the boat between my seat and the peddles. I bring a sheet of visqueen (Plastic film) to put down for a ground cloth. I have collapsible poles (REI) that I use to hold up one or both corners of the tarp to make an awning when I have trees or just to support the tarp when I don't. I put the ground cloth under the tarp and tie any bug net to the poles holding the tarp. That picks the net off my face.

Recently, I pick up a used Tee-Pee style tent (GoLite Shangri-la 3) and that might be my "Plan B". I have a few Solo tents If I don't like the center pole concept.

Facts of life - if you are kayaking, you need to have a non-tree option.

Here is the handy hammock. It looks pretty complicated but really innovative.

Fair warning...this sort of discussion will quickly get this thread moved to the paddling forum in the Donating Members Off Topic area or posts removed.

Let's keep the discussion centered on methods to hang a hammock.

i've seen the youtube vids for Handy Hammock. At 2 pounds, i think it's going to be your best bet. Seems fairly easy to set up too, and has stakes for,all types of ground.
