    Hanging Hammock over Concrete

My house was heavily damaged during Hurricane Sandy, but it's about to be raised. I'm pretty excited about the hammock hanging possibilities underneath the house. It will be a 24 x 54 ft. space, about 8 ft. high, with shelter from the rain. However, I'm seriously concerned about hanging over the concrete slab. Even at 18 inches, that's a serious head injury waiting to happen if there is hammock/suspension failure.

I'm trying to figure out the best material to cushion the fall (liability and such). The best thing I've found is interlocking foam tiles like this:

Can anyone think of a better material to prevent head injuries? I'm just about at my limit for concussions in a lifetime. I've actually thought about a wood deck over the slab, but it seems you couldn't lay the wood directly on the slab. You'd need some kind of mini-joist (2-3 inches) to give the wood the cushioning effect the brain needs.

Those rubber mats are great since they interlock. Also you could get rubber mulch, but, it would take 3-4 inches to cushion the concrete.
Enjoy and have fun with your family, before they have fun without you

You could build a large wooden frame below the hammock and fill it with the rubber mulch or sand. Be sure to cover it when not in use.

I think I'm looking for something removable/ store-able, which is why I like the tiles. I live 2 blocks from the Atlantic Ocean and there's a river right behind my house. In the last 25 years, I've seen more and more flood days each year. With flooding, comes pollutants of all manner. Hurricane Sandy provided a valuable lesson on that. I still can't grow a tomato 'cause the soil is ruined. I need a soil-ectomy.

So whatever anti-concussive flooring I choose probably should be removable/store-able. The good thing about concrete is you can just hose it off with a pressure washer, but I'm concerned that permanent anti-concussive flooring might become toxic after a flood.

The mats look like a good choice. May still hurt to fall but should prevent concussions.

Rock climber crash pads would make for a comfy fall. They are pretty pricey though.

Yeah, cost is a factor - looks like about $2500 with the foam tiles.

$2500?! Couldn't you just stack a few cheap ccf pads from Wally world underneath when you hang?

Just hang a spare bridge hammock underneath! It will catch you if you fall!

My idea is a totally hammock-centric living space underneath the house. It will be a hammock haven, with hammocks strung up wherever possible. I was envisioning at least 8 to 12 hammocks utilizing every available inch of hanging space.

Your idea works - it's not as scaleable as I'd like.
