I can't believe the HF profanity filters discriminate against people like **** Clark of American Bandstand. Think of all the Dicks on Hammock Forums that can't even say, "Hi, my name is ****."

Even more interesting is that the profanity filters will allow me to talk about the oppression of Dicks in the Plural, but prohibits me from talking about individual Dicks. I'm feeling somewhat dicked by the technology.

Hah, well I definitely can't vouch for how others might use such a feature. In my case I'd still contribute to the thread, and if I really liked the conversation I'd click something to make it more likely that it could be found again by me or others. Having never clicked a "Like" button or "Thumbs Up" anywhere before, I'm not a great person to judge how they would be used by the masses. This site is as close to online social networking as I get.

I'm open to any other suggestions that make it easier to find good legacy content on the site for new blood as well as the old farts.

Other forums I frequent have a 'like' feature, and I use that as a way to 'bookmark' posts that I found particularly valuable, and not have to 'bookmark' them on each of the 4 computers that I regularly use. I then can login to HF from *any* computer, and check my 'liked posts' to find them again. Otherwise, I'd have to search. When searching for a previously seen post, and unless I get lucky with my search terms, I don't find what I'd previously seen. And when I do find the 'thread', I have to search through all the posts to find the one I wanted.

Try a search for "turtledog stand" and sift through 427 threads. Find a thread that *might* be the one you're looking for, then do *another* search to try to locate the particular post. An alternative is to subscribe to the thread, and then go through my subscriptions to find the thread, and do a search from there to the particular post. I just find it more convenient to check which posts I "liked".

Maybe I should get myself a facebook account, and see what the problem is with "like" there?

Bookmarks in the Cloud/Syncing solve that problem for me.

I use the Subscribe To function for this but unfortunately it gets thrown in with any other thread that I post to, and it gets to a point where I really can't clean it up. This is a good point and a bookmark function (with ability to name the bookmark) would be a cool idea but that is a separate thread.

I think there is no need to add anything else. You have a choice to read a thread that you find interesting to you; regardless how popular it is. I like the sincerity that is given back that someone posts on their comments. I really don't know what my filters are for finding something interesting; but I have glanced at many a thread and learned something new whether how popular it was or not.

Let me explain how the Wall Street Journal uses "thumbs up" and why I think it's valuable.

There, after reading an article, there are user comments. You can look through them either "last to first", "first to last", and by the "number of recommendations".

Sometimes there are very large numbers of posts, over a thousand. What the "thumbs up" ranking allows is a quick way to see the posts that have been judged valuable by the most individuals.

Additionally, the WSJ has a separate algorithm which ranks the articles that are garnering the most comments and attention. Sometimes, it might highlight an article that's getting a lot of attention that I don't find interesting, but often I find the ranking valuable.

You can look at rankings and "thumbs up" as superficial creations by fools. But the fact that so many forums have gone in this direction makes me think that most people find them valuable, and not just Face Bookers.

It's a tool that increases searching efficiency. I didn't realize the value of such things until I played around with it, and it opened my eyes. I bet it would have the same effect on a lot of the naysayers. But maybe not. Either way, it's not something to be afraid of.

It's called the power of the network. Which, by the way, is what makes this forum a great resource.

Say "thanks" in a post - people will appreciate it & it doesn't take much effort.
Create a new thread & ask for advice if you need help researching something.
Check out Derek's book if you don't like clutter in threads - it distills a lot of info without the commentary.
    Totally Agree Paul.

There is a difference between a site designed to convey information versus a site designed to elicit ratings.
HF encourages conversations, free flowing opinions, and relationships - instead of single-click "popularity" ratings.
Besides - do you really believe that only "popular" posts are useful when you have a specific problem or question?

If you Really want to find what you are looking for on HF? Then, use the google search modifier like this:

    cannibal cold site:hammockforums.net

-- cannibal is a long time hammock forums user

I must agree. Don't clutter the site if you have nothing to add to the subject. HF is different and that is why we are all here to support it. And support each other.

Agreed. This is a forum not a social network. I think rating a post is a pointless exercise.
