Ok - for anybody that is still following along - all 5 of you anyways - I did some research on various VBulletin sites and how they implemented the "like", "thanks", "thumbs up", etc. feature.

I did find one implementation that I thought had potential - scubaboard.com
It checked a number of boxes for me - minimalist real estate taken; the site doesn't go overboard (get it?) on giving you badges or reps or whatever for how many "likes" you given or received; and my favorite part - at the top of the thread, you could use the info to get an overview on posts that people liked.

It was this last part - making the data useful - that would sway me to get behind the "like" request.
I mean, who wouldn't find it useful to quickly find the most liked posts within the TurtleDog stand thread instead of reading all 2000 posts.

Anyway, here's a 4 min video showing all this.

The first 2 minutes show what I don't like about some sites implementation (my own personal opinions).
Skip to the 2 min part if you want to see the ScubaBoard implementation.

The way the scuba site used it was great. I would be in favor of something like that. It could especially be handy on a really long thread...maybe like the mini spreader bar thread where people are coming up with better and better ideas, but they might be 5 pages apart.

Can someone explain the difference between the current "Rate this Thread" 1 to 5 stars and the proposed thumbs up or down?
Would the thumb be for each and every post in a thread?

If there's a thumbs up button, there's got to be a thumbs down button like this:

Yes, it would be for every post, not just the entire thread.

    Yes. The little up arrow.

Here is a thread where they were used a bit: http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=1818899

I suspect most of us are very individualistic. I personally strongly dislike facebook and the rest of the social media. I think a lot of nasty, thoughtless comments are made just because someone is in a mood.

In my opinion this site works very well, the moderators do an excellent service. The vast majority of members are very thoughtful, different idea's abound and are always welcome. I like the fact members of HF rarely feed on each other. Here at HF we have had some very emotional discussions without anyone being bashed, we have differing ideas and concepts, yet we each get to have our own say and no one says, this view is popular, this view is not so we should slam it. Nope, I vote not to rate each comment, I do not think it would work well on this site.

    Agreed.
Besides... What is useful for one is not necessarily useful for all.
