Strength ratings are determined by liability as much as anything else - manufacturers often grossly underestimate the strength of their products b/c they know someone is gonna push the limits. For example, my HH BULA is rated to 200 lbs...but I've had ~250 in it overnight before and never noticed any difference.
Engineering-wise, it would be the weakest link in the system...which varies by model based on materials.
But in the end, I wonder how many manufacturers actually test for their strength ratings. More like sticking a wet finger in the wind, I bet.
I use 1.9 oz ripstop for mine. I have a couple from 1.1 oz but the kind I had was too stretchy.
“Republics are created by the virtue, public spirit, and intelligence of the citizens. They fall when the wise are banished from the public councils because they dare to be honest, and the profligate are rewarded because they flatter the people, in order to betray them.” ~Judge Joseph Story
