    Scrapping Velcro for Zipper?

I just returned from a hike.

I have a Speer-type hammock, and I enjoy it, but in two outings so far, I've found 2 things I'd like to change- the suspension and the bug netting.

For the bug netting, I'm thinking about switching from velcro to zippers. Aside from the weight factor, are there any drawbacks or pitfalls to this option?

I have made both. Velcro can be a pain some times. I prefer zippers. I have only had one problem with zipper and that was in 17 degrees, zipper had ice on it and it was a little difficult to get open. I do use outdoor nylon zippers.

I put a large, wide U shaped zipper in my Speer hammock bugnet so I wouldn't have to deal with that pesky velcro. Did the same to my Bridge Hammocks too, including the JRB. You won't be sorry, in fact it is easy if you sew the zipper in on both sides THEN cut the slit between the two sides of the zipper, then finally add the second seam to each zipper side. You can make any shape you want this way and it will surely work fine.
Predictions are risky, especially when it comes to the future.

I thought the Speer bugnet was a little too narrow, so I got what is essentially a bug sock (with zipper entrance) from Brandon at WB. That leaves the Velcro intact on the hammock which makes an absolute perfect attachment for the Speer SnugFit, which is, in my humble opinion, a perfect UQ for the Speer hammock (and others, too).
