Sipsey is a wilderness area an if I'm not mistaken the only hunting allowed in there are occasional, permitted hog culls. Hunting is allowed in the surrounding Bankhead Nat Forest. Right now, it is deer archery and small game season. State rifle hunting does not start until mid November. Even then you should be perfectly safe if you wear a blaze orange colored hat to alert any hunters to your presence in the area. Also, as an extra safety precaution, I'd advise that you don't wear any white garments. Might be mistaken for the flagging of a deer's white tail.
I am pretty sure I have seen others talk about hunting in Sipsey because they were talking about it when planning the last group hang out there.
I can wear orange but I am more worried about a hunter mistaking me in my hammock as a big deer in the early morning hours! May be better to go to a State park.
Archery season started October 15 and hunting is definitely allowed in the Sipsey.
No guts, no glory? No risk, no reward? Where's your sense of adventure! Laying there, all snug in your hammock wondering if you're about to be impaled....
Pre-edit: it's late on a saturday and i'm not sure if impaled is the right word.
I wouldn't give it a second thought. Go to Sipsey.
The Sipsey is surrounded by the Black Warrior Wildlife Management Area and this is where everyone will be hunting at. The major trails in the Sipsey are full of hikers right now and no hunters are going to be hunting where people will be walking around all day. I went this weekend to Thompson Creek and I saw a few trucks parked on the side of the roads in the management area but nobody hunting in the Sipsey. I believe they do have special hunts in the wilderness area certain times of the season. It is being overrun with hogs.
I have heard that about the hogs also. Any one here ever run into them?
gps4 and I saw one crossing the road after leaving the group hang.
