thinking about down for future quilting.

I am not in a place to build a quilt yet. I am going to be working on my dl integrated bugnet, but another post got me thinking about the cost of down.

I saw HK2001 post that rsbtr had 700fp 3oz for $20. That seemed cheap and doable for a quilt. So my next question was how much would I need to make a TQ to match my 20 uq. So I went to UGQ (could have been any vendor this is just the same as my uq). They show the flightjacket with 18.5 oz of fill for a 700fp 55" wide. They also show 850fp with 15 oz.

So this is the math I did.

    700fp x 18.5oz@ 6.67 = $123.3
    800fp x 16.16oz @ 8.33 = 133.3
    850fp x 15 @ 12.67 = 190

It would appear to me that the 800 would be the way to go if you wanted treated down. I took the difference between 18.5 and 15 which is 3.5 and divided it by 3. Giving me 1.16. This would represent the declining weight in oz's needed to get from 700fp to 850fp. So 750 = 17.32, the 800 is 16.16 and 850 15.

If my math is right, and also my logic in the declining weight needed, then it looks like you are paying 56.7 for 1.16 oz's saved.

I see Wilderness Logic has 850fp (does not appear to be treated) for 8.75 per oz or if you buy in bulk 8.25 which would be 123.75 or 131.25.

I am guessing it would take about 5 yards of material (say argon 90) $30, 4.25 for shockcord, $13 for baffles, say 2-3$ for cordlocks or buttons if needed. So I am looking at somewhere around 173.25 to 181.5 or 183. Depending on if I wanted 700, 800, or 850 and treated of not treated. 850 treated being 240.

i have. i was checking rsbtr's primaloft thread. i have also looked into cs or apex. my issues have more to do with size. i am not an UL type. because of that and my tendency to over pack, i had trouble stuffing my stuff into my pack. i am not saying it wouldn't fit, but its a lot of squeezing. i havent made anything yet, so maybe i will start with synthetic. I have stayed away from either because I thought down was more expensive.

Keep in mind WL down is not DWR treated - if you're looking for that. Unless that's changed since last I looked.

Check here: http://www.downlinens.com/products/premium-washed-down for bulk down by the lb. Their prices are pretty competitive, up to 800FP. 850FP is a $35 jump, and probably not worth it. My guess is due to higher demand for 850FP right now.

Prices are with free shipping, also. These are for DWR treated down. It's $5 less per lb for none.
    950FP: $12.81 per oz
    900FP: $11.56 per oz
    850FP: $10.00 per oz
    800FP: $7.81 per oz
    750FP: $7.18 per oz
    700FP: $6.87 per oz
    650FP: $5.93 per oz
    600FP: $5.31 per oz

How important is DWR down if the fabric you use is DWR?

What about both? I think this would only be an issue if you get soaked thru. The dwr down would probably shed the water faster and retain the heat better. you can also go with neither and go the UQP route.

I think if I am doing it I am going with the 850fp untreated. Then depending on fabric maybe dwr.

this is great. See, I go thru the mental motions for some time before I put it together. I have been churning my dl with bugnet for a while now. When I am ready to get the materials I will look into better prices and try and remember this link. The main thing I wanted to know is if my weight figures hold up based on UGQ's numbers.

So in looking at the above numbers a 20 degree 600fp bag would require 20.82 oz and the 650fp would be 19.66, give or take. The question I had that prompted this thread was the cost difference between oz's per fp. because the higher the fp the less oz's you needed.

    Oh, I see.

Yes, more or less. FP is measured in in^3/oz. so you can calculate volume if you know weight and FP.

When I do the calc I get this:
    700 FP * 18.5 oz = 12950 in^3
    12950 in^3 / 850 FP = 15.235 oz
    12950 in^3 / 800 FP = 16.188 oz

However, when you calculate based on 850 FP with 15oz the volume is calculated at 12750 in^3. I wonder if they overstuff more with the lower FP, to help the quilt fill out better?

Either way, I'd do the comparison based on equal volume. I'd also compare based on your specific design/dimensions. I'd recommend using CatSplat's UQ calculator here: https://www.hammockforums.net/forum/...=1#post1210404

I've been crawling the internet for the best price on down. I'm very curious about the quality of this seller's down on amazon:

    http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00KI3EM62/...I3MWPRT7GMZFGI

$65.95 + $5.99 shipping for 1lb of down is the best I've seen anywhere.

Thinking about taking a chance and trying it.

Quality of down when you are resourcing it is very difficult if you can not see it. I recently purchased a high end name brand quilt, the down in the quilt felt like it was of good quality, however when I cut the quilt open, I was very disappointed, tricks had been used, to make the filling seem like it was of a much higher quality. I pitched the entire quilt, I was not willing to pick through it for hours to get ride of the stuff that was not down. In the future, I will open a little spot and see what I am purchasing, if all the feel tests are positive.

I have found some reasonably priced down on the internet, I just did not get clear answers on the ratio of feathers to down, the type of down and where it came from. Be very cautious in what you purchase. Check reputations.
