Hey everybody, I was with Atlas at Shawnee the other day, when we met the Hammock people for the first time. At first I wasn't completely sold, but the more I thought about it, and the more we look into it, it makes complete sense. So we're completely sold on the hammock idea, and now we're just looking into the different stylesjuuuuuh.........
Right now it looks like we're favoring the Warbonnet Blackbird hammock. We're looking for your reviews on it, and the difference between 1.1 model and the 1.7. And we're wondering what kind of tarp do we really need
And to GrizzlyAdams, yes the trail was a little more difficult than I anticipated , its been a few years since I've done something like that. I really enjoyed myself, and meeting everyone was a huge plus.

For Warbonnet info, I'd simply point you to the Warbonnet Subforum here. All your initial questions will have been talked about at length, including pictures and video.

1.1 and 1.7 refer to the weight of the fabric that each is made from. 1.1 oz/sq yard, and 1.7 oz/sq yard

There are a lot of different hammock makes...take your time and ask questions. You're on the right path, though!

No, both weights of fabric are thin and breathable enough that you won't notice a difference in warmth. But the 1.7 is indeed both heavier and stronger.

I'd also wager that the 1.7 oz stretches less.

Having laid eyes on both you and Atlas, I don't imagine that either of you weighs more than 170 lbs, and the 1.1 oz version would be strong enough, but with a little bit more stretch.

On the tarp thing, it really comes down to your intended use. Casual weekend hikes that you'll cancel if there's a storm in the forecast---you don't need to worry much about coverage at the ends of the tarp. I really like the MacCat Deluxe built by Brian over at OES . If you have the coin for it, one made from SpinnTex is noticably lighter than the silnylon one, and has no stretch. But the silnylon is great also and is only 12 oz. I've been through some big wind and rain in these. With the right pitch you get great coverage. Still, F=for contexts where you may want to close one or both ends of the tarp off for weather protection, e.g., winter-time, the more rectangular winter tarp from Speer Hammock gets great reviews, I have a very similar tarp made by Jacks 'R Better. These come in at 19 or 20 oz. The guy who makes the Blackbird makes a mean tarp with doors (soon to be removable!) as well, lots of folks like these too.
