I put the whole pillow in a garbage bag, slit the top, take what I need and twist tie or rubber band the bag closed.

My way as well. Last time I did it, I was particularly sloppy and used the leaf blower to move the spillage away from the house/front door. A ~1/4 ounce of down makes a really nice snow flurry simulation.

We have a lot of resident geese and it always looks like I plucked one! That 1/4 oz of lost down is Soooo worth the ease of a faster chore.

I know some folks used to set up their tent and work in there transferring down. It keeps the mess contained.
I may be slow... But I sure am gimpy.

Soak it in some water with down wash. Takes a while to wet it good, and some will still float away, but far less than dry.

I've had good luck buying down from Quest Outfitters.

Thanks for all the advice. I've got material for a down TQ and UQ, minus the down. Weighing the pro's and con's of buying from ebay vs buying from one of the vendors mentioned. I don't mind the extra work. I can make a large TQ and full UQ for less than 100 bucks for BOTH, or a little more...vs the money I'd spend on them new. I like the savings. I also like the idea of buying in pre-weighed packages...very convenient. I have these very large gaylord bags (plastic) from work i might use to extract the down in (they're HUGE bags...i can stand up in one with room to spare).

The only time I tried that it took me about 3 hours to clean my son's tent. Down and noseeum make fast friends.

Or maybe you folks have better sellers in mind and would share the'yr finds. THANKS
I just purchased from the second vendor you listed. I will report back when it comes in as to the quality, but I am hoping for the best. I have four quilts to make, and have never even attempted one yet. Lol, I guess I'm going to have my hands full. :-)

Thanks, much appreciated. Yeah, i'm hoping to make an UQ and a TQ out of the down i'm going to buy. If you're willing to be careful and spend the time to do it right, i don't think taking the down out of the pillows would be too much of a problem.

Agreed, it'll be slow and tedious, but I'm sure I'll get the hang of it after the first two. Then it should be smooth sailing for the last two! :-)
