I'm thinking of a possible hike up to the top of Jane Bald and back to the car if it is snowing before Bob's Dairyland Saturday Morning.

Anyone interested in cranking it up a notch by hiking in from Hughes Gap rather than Carvers Gap? It sounds like Saturday is off the table for most, but a Stan Murray hike from RHK could be interesting, followed by an exit down the Overmountain Victory Trail to Hampton Creek. Total mileage would be about 17 from Friday to Sunday.

I'm not firmly comitted on attending yet but I'd be interested in some hiking if the snow levels allow.

I'll be coming in Friday night around 8pm. I don't mind hiking in the snow in the dark, but you are likely planning on being there before I am. I think that FreeHome might be driving up from GA and meeting me to ride up.

More than likely, I'd give a 5 mile uphill snow hike a few hours to complete (Friday). A start time of about 2:30 to 3:30 would provide enough time to make it by sunset. Saturday would potentially be a hike from RHK to Stan Murray which is about 6.2 miles. (Stan Murray has limited water sources) Sunday would be a trek down to Hampton Creek which is about 4.5 miles.

The above can easily be managed as a dayhike in warmer weather. Winter is a bit more iffy, but 6.2 miles for the long would easily be doable with the appropriate footgear. Impossible to say whether crampons or snowshoes would be the best bet without knowing more.

From past experience, the coldest times are the times spent hanging out in camp. Once I have a pack on and am moving, it's much easier to stay warm than standing around.

-30 wind chill factor here tonight. Looking, but still not sure folks.
Afoot and light-hearted, I take to the open road,
Healthy, free, the world before me,
The long brown path before me, leading wherever I choose.
