16 miles is a good day on perfect trail conditions, 16 miles, 6"+ of snow, unbroken trail ( more then likely) and more snow forecasted for Saturday. A challenge for sure. Be sure to have crampons.

I'm only staying one night. I didn't think that this was going to be a two night gig.

I'm heading out shortly, if I can't get close enough to Craver's Gap then I'm going to return to the hostel, I was just told most of the roads above 3000' are impassable without chains 4x4 etc. I'm not going to a 5 mile road walk to a trail head, then hike another 2.5.

I'll post conditions from my personal observations ASAP.

You can road walk up to the old "hotel" from Carvers gap up to the bathroom parking lot and then walk about a half a mile back north a half mile. Might be a better option.

The driver said we might be able to get within 5 miles of the Gap ..

I think that we are hoping to get there if the road is clear. If it is not I think we are considering the Apple House site only as a backup.

Shuttled Black Wolf to Carvers Gap today. Dropped him off at 11:30 am. Drove him up in a Honda Ridgeline. Highway 143 to Carvers is covered in snow but passable. We did not use our 4 wheel drive option. It was a beautiful clear cold morning on Roan Mt.!
