    My Dad's Hammock Stand

Here's a sneak peek at a hammock stand that my dad has been working on. This is a prototype, and it is very much still a work in progress. This one weighs in around 50 pounds, and the longest piece is about 41 inches long. He's hoping to get it closer to 30 pounds and with the longest piece around 36 inches.

It's been weight-tested to 400 pounds, without any signs of flex.

This stand in particular is fashioned from schedule 40 steel, and was then powdercoated. He's also tried galvanized steel, but that had a bit too much wobble. He's working on procuring some aluminum for his next iteration, which will surely make it lighter.

Also, the legs simply slide onto the ridge pole, which makes it very easy to set up. One of the nicest things about this design is that the legs can be spread further apart to lower/raise one end, which will allow for it to be used on an inclined surface. Whoopie slings are used to keep the legs from opening entirely. Also, the legs are telescoping, to make them shorter for carrying and storage. Packed down, it fits in the back of my Chevrolet Cruze with ease. It's really not much bigger than a typical camping chair.

One feature that is currently missing but he is working on is an attachment to slide on the ends for the hammock suspension and tarp ridgeline. We're not in love with using the s-hooks to attach the hammock.

Looks nice! Any chance of getting Dutch's new double whoopie hook to work on this? It would make a really nice alternative to a inflatable mattress for visiting friends and family.

You know, that's a great idea! I'm not 100% certain that it won't interfere with the legs, but I think it's worth testing. I'm not sure when that will fit into my schedule, but I'll give an update once I've found the time.

Dude! I'd be interested in hearing what the weight is once it's in aluminum. Looks awesome already! But that weight!

The galvanized came in around 35 pounds, possibly less than that. Aluminum should weigh a lot less than that, I would think.

We're likely going to offer a version of this stand for sale on our site at some point, hopefully early next year. We're currently toying with the idea of offering two options; the steel, which will cost less, but weigh more, and then also the aluminum.

We don't currently have a price point in mind. We have a target to keep it under, but I'd prefer not to share that, just in case we cannot meet it.
