    Gear testing

This will be a great weekend for testing winter gear. Its really cold here in these hills of north Ga. We are planning a trip on the AT Thanksgiving weekend so I just want to make sure I have things dialed in before we go.

Yep, you've got yourself a little bit of polar vortex! Have fun testing.

Yep, it's pretty frigid. Hope you have good luck testing your system.

Well the gear testing went well last. When I first got in the hammock it didn't take long to realize I didn't have my U.Q. adjusted right because I had a cold butt. After a little tweaking I got it all dialed in pretty good to stay warm. The only problem I had was calf ridge, I'm not sure if it's my hammock or what but I had to fold a Thermarest z lite to put under my calf to sleep. I have a Hennessy Hyperlite I'm 6ft tall and that is within the specs but I've heard a longer hammock can help with calf ridge. This is my first hammock and I just want it to work so bad.

I just purchased an 11 foot for that very reason. One leg had calf ridge and the other was hyperextended. You need to try other people's hammocks because not all hammocks or even 11 foot hammocks are created equal. I found and Argon Envy to be the best fit for me...I think.

So far it feels great but tonight is MY first night in it. My test will be down to about 30 degrees. It's 35 now but going lower overnight. Good luck with your continued testing.

I plan to sleep out in the backyard testing some gear Tuesday night as that is going to be the coldest night this week in my area. If I am lucky if might get down to high 20's. Not much but got to work with what I have. Just wish I had some snow to add to it.
I am still 18 but with 52 years of experience !

Did some cool weather testing last night as it was supposed to get down to the single digits, but only made it down to 15 deg.

    What gear you running?

I also tested my kit last night. I just received my TQ, a Christmas gift to me, to complement the bottom quilt and retired the sleeping bag to the gear locker. The low dipped to 23 overnight with a slight breeze. I did wake this morning with a bit of a chill on my back but not significant, I attribute it to me moving around in the night possible opening a gap between hammock and UQ as I was toasty earlier in the night. It was the first night with the TQ and WOW did it outperform my bag, now just need to tweak the UQ and head out into the piney woods. I'm just waiting for more reports on Dutch's Winter Sock to ask Santa for something under the tree.

For nostalgia I fired up the old Svea 123 this morning to make the morning brew, gotta love that roar!

Good luck with the rest of your testing.
