    Is CF that noisy?

I was wondering about the working/using experience with a CF tarp. I read the post asking if CF was the best material and there were a few references to noise but mostly posters praised its light weight. So light weight is a given; I got that.

But how does it compare to SilNylon noise-wise in the rain and wind. Here's what I'm talk'n 'bout. I was looking at inflatable camp pillows and some reviews warned about the crinkly noise, right next to your ear, of some brands/models and they were right. So I was able to find one that wasn't so loud. When I looked at the new lightweight Therm-a-rests, the fancy ones that cost over $100; they were basically air mattresses, and they were very loud. Any movement was crackle, crackle, crackle. So I'll stick to my old Therm-a-rest and foam pad.

Now with tarps, I understand wind flap and the not so quiet pitter-pat of rain on the surface. I'm not demanding silence from the tarp. I'm just wondering if every little breeze brings forth a orchestra of sound from the CF tarp?

It is crinkly, but not that bad. Rain on it makes a higher pitched PING sound. I would not use it for pillows.
You know how a Space Blanket is? I would say my CF tarp makes half that noise or less.
In wind? Not really any more noise that silnylon.

I find mine to be very quiet. Even in a breeze.

I have been using a CF tarp for a few yrs now and love it. As for the noise, it is nothing that IMO causes any frustration or inability to sleep. Once you have used it a few times it softens up a bit and looses a lot of that crinkly sound. They are also very durable. I have put mine to the test in heavy rain, snow and wind and it comes out on the back end like a champ.

Cuben is WAY WAY quieter than spinnaker, FWIW.

    Nothing to worry about.
