UQ differential cut baffles. What do you do?

So I've got all my fabric cut and seams marked out ready to go save for this little conundrum.

For my particular quilt, the inner shell fabric is 79" long and the outer is 85" long. For the baffle mesh, should I just go in 3" on either end and cut at an angle so that one long edge is 79" and the other is 85"?

How do you guys address the differential on the baffle?

Thanks in advance for any input!

I am very confused, so need to clear up a few things first.

Did you use the uq calculator for your sizes ?
Are you making the channels from the fabric or using something else like grosgrain ribbon ?
Do the baffels run the length of your uq or go accross ?

The extra length on the outer might be material to make you channels ? Normally the width is the differential the outer being a lot wider than the inner.

I used Boston's mod calculator. It adds to the length so that the ends of the baffles don't get squished.

I'm using mosquito netting for the baffles and they run lengthwise.

****... that brings to light another thing I hadn't considered. Figuring out what to do about the length difference of the shells. Guess I'll just do a couple fold thingies.

I think the length difference is to make the channels.

When i did mine with my mod to the calculator the lengths were the same except for channels. The ends are cinched up so doesnt really matter what happens at the ends.

I sewed down the width of my baffles with the longer shell then used the remainder to make channels. This way down is not compressed at the ends. Creates a "bathtub" with the outer shell and the inner shell is the "lid" for the bathtub.

    I'm not sure I understand.

As it is currently, if I sewed the baffles to both shells, I'd have ~ 3" of baffle mesh extending past the ends of the inner (shorter) shell. I'm not sure what to do with the extra tiddlybits.

I sewed my baffles to the longer, outer shell first. When I came to my mark for the end of the chamber, I turned the outer shell 90 degrees and sewed down the width of my baffle, which was 2 inches. I still had 2 inches of longer shell material left over to make a channel. This resulted in a "bathtub" shape to the outer shell. My baffle walls length were equal to the length of my inner shell, minus seam allowance on either side.

You have a 6 inch difference in length between your inner and outer shell. If it were me, with these dimensions and using a 2 inch tall baffle wall, I would lay it out like this:
    baffleUQ.png
The green is the outer shell, it is sewed along the long edge of the baffle wall and also down its short edge, leaving 2 inches on each end to make a channel. Your baffle wall (black) would be 77 inches in length. Your inner shell (red) is currently 79 inches. I would use an inch on each end for seam allowance. 79 inches minus 1 inch on each side = 77 inches. The outer shell should be folded twice over (making sure to fold over the inner shell) to make channels for shock cord. This makes sense to me, but it might not to you. If so, let me know your baffle height, seam allowances, etc and we can figure it out. Maybe another terrible paint drawing will be needed!

    Oooohhh. I get it!

So the baffle walls are only the length of the inner shell, and the outer shell gets sewn to three sides of the baffle walls.

    Big big thanks!
