Question 2 person Hammock, and Bugnet

    Hello all!
I was hoping someone could help me with the creation of a two person hammock!

    As a background:
I have done previous hammocks before, both having foot boxes, expanded sides, and being double layered. Right now a friend of mine is asking for a simple hammock for two people.

    Specifications:
The problem comes into play with his height, 6'1". The two people together should weigh in the 300lb range.

    My Ideas:
I was thinking of a rectangular double layered hammock, utilizing 11' of 1.1oz and 1.9oz ripstop nylon from Ripstopbytheroll. No grosgrain, just a simple hammock.

Will this be big enough? I have never made a simple rectangular hammock so I'm not entirely sure if the extra extensions and footbox would be worth the extra material and weight. Ideas or thoughts on the size and weight of these individuals?

    Edit:
I also would like advice on bugnets. Less important, but could I just make a cocoon net with a zipper down the middle? Would two lengths of bugnet 54" wide be enough?

If I get you right, you want to make one normal, gathered end hammock for two people to sleep in it? If you search for the topic, you'll find that only very few people like sharing one hammock for the whole night. Most prefer two-hammock-designs like e.g. the Clark Vertex. The easiest solution for two people would be the "two hammocks, three trees, one tarp" method:

    https://www.hammockforums.net/forum/...erlaping-tarps
    https://www.hammockforums.net/forum/...-Jocassee-Hang

If you don't have three trees, this method comes in handy: https://www.hammockforums.net/forum/...r-Two-Hammocks
Dutch just came out with a special hook which makes this set-up easier.

If your friend insists on a one-hammock-solution then pick the layers according to Randy's chart, and try to find a wide fabric (more than 60").

Dutch also makes a suspension system that receives a spreader pole which keeps the 2 hammocks apart.

looks a bit cramped to me though - could do with more tarp.

    Thanks everyone!
I had a look at the clark hammock, very tempting. Maybe down the road I might invest!
I am most likely going to go with the separate hammock but same tarp idea. Has anyone ever tried doing a two person sock? Too much condensation perhaps?

Perhaps I am unromantic, but I don't see the need of a 2 person sock.... Unless you want to stay in touch that much until the very minute your eyes shut to the moment they are open. Frankly, I think Kristen and I like those couple of minutes where we can relax without effecting one another (meaning I can fuss and turn on my lights, and play with my phone... And she can roll over and sleep).
But in truth, I think it would be more fabric and hassle to make one big sock than the payout would be worth. What if you need to have your hammocks a bit further apart bc of tree selections than your single sock measures for. But I could be wrong. YMMV and HYOH.

Now hanging under one tarp we do have have experience with. We put two separate hammocks side by side, on different trees on one end and staring on the same tree or very close at the other, and we hang under our Kelty Noah 16.... We LOVE IT!!!!!

That's what I'm looking for! I was sort of hoping for a new project... seems like I'm simply going to tell them to do that side by side configuration! As for me, I might start looking into making a bigger tarp. (I think I might use this two person camping idea for my own as well).

Thanks everyone! As this is my first post, this forum made great first impressions!

Now as far as the bug nets... We made ours to go around our entire hammocks using fronkey's method, and simply have our own bug nets just like our hammocks. I think this setup is the best of both worlds because we have OUR own private space together when we go on a group hang, or with friends (which group hangers are), or family. But we still have individual setups, making it easy to get in and out, and midnight pee times, and what have you.
I only have experience with Fronkey's design myself and there is a lot I like about it, and a bit I don't:
    https://www.hammockforums.net/forum/...ammock-bug-net

    Likes:
    1) can easily fidget with the underquilt
    2) reach out under when I want to grab something off the floor or mid-table if we are car camping.
    3) easy in and out for those midnight nature call runs
    4) hammock feels less constrictive when it doesn't have a net pulling on it directly

    Dislikes:
I find this design a bit of a PITA when I'm setting up because the net has to go on prior to everything setup in it, such as the underquilt. If I were redesigning this specific type of net, I would add an opening on one end, like Dehoja's design. https://www.hammockforums.net/forum/...t-Instructions
Maybe not as big as the whole side, but a big enough opening that the net can be pulled over my entire hammock setup making it easy to pul back when I don't want the net there. Between Derek and Fronkey, this may be a perfect no zipper net.

I have not had much experience with other nets, so someone may think there is a better, simpler way. Knotty's net looks simple, and despite my disbelief for full enclosure, I have not heard anyone say it doesn't work. (and besides being very nice, Knotty is one of the smarties, so I doubt he made a net that leaves him swiping at bugs all night).

    I don't know jack
Why not try a longer hammock? 12 or 13 or even 14 that way you can each have an end and share the middle. Problems: need longer tarp and under quilt and maybe both of you slide to the middle. Dream y'all's dream.

If your heads are on opposite ends of hammock then it might help if you are both the same lay--either both left or both right lay. Yes, try longer custom hammock.
