Did a prelim hang in my messy old barn with the basted stitches to see how everything lay .
The foot end stiches ripped out from being too tight so I revised the bottom seam to give a lot more slack to the underquilt .

Made some marks on the hammock while I was laying in it to maximize the slack so that the insulation would lay uncompressed .

So what I came up with was a VEE shaped bottom hem about 10 inches above the straight line I had . This creates a bag for your body more or less .

Here is the insulated hammock . Easily converted to peapod if desired .

So here I am laying in my insulated womb . Note the bungee cords in the outer seam to pull the sides around me in a cocoon fashion .

Here's some pics I found of my Speer PeaPod laying flat. I like that the Speer Peapod (114" L x 72" W) is bigger than the JRB Katahdin (85" L x 61" W). I sold the Peapod to purchase the Exped Wallcreeper. Kinda miss the Peapod, but enjoy the Hilleberg Bivanorak/ Exped Dreamwalker dual purpose.

To give you an idea for the design, look here:

    http://wiggys.com/moreinfo.cfm?Product_ID=299

It's just a big rectangle with a full length zipper to turn it into a bag. The zipper runs down the center of the bag. At the feet is a draw cord that when cinched up closes the footbox. It's a product they used to make for a Company called Ecotat, who sold it to the military. Now Wiggy's sells it directly to the military.
Here are some pics from the Ecotat site:

Uh...yeah. I am totally serious. It works great at half the price and you'll have a ground bag, too. Been doing it since 2006.

@RiverJoe ... I like what you're working on there, looks like you can still get somewhat asymmetrical while inside.
@2Trees ... Thanks for taking the time to locate and post those ...exactly what I seeking
@ggreaves ... Great info ... I like the idea of making it wearable as well .. Thanks

    Hey Dark&Stormy,
I think you are heading in the right direction for insulation (my personal opinion). The "PeaPod" wrap-around style of insulation is the best way for me. A single piece of gear that wraps around and keeps you in a caccoon of warmth and less seams for your body heat to escape. The top and bottom insulation 2-peice set-up (used with hammocks with permanent bug nets attached) has too many openings and doesn't hold in the heat as well as a PeaPod, fully-enclosed style insulation.

There are many types of PeaPod style quilts out there....
    -Speer Peapod
    -JRB Katahdin
    -Exped Dreamwalker (Wallcreeper)

I use the Exped Wallcreeper and a Hilleberg Bivanorak on the outside for waterproof/breathable cover. Works really nice and I can wear the Exped Wallcreeper with the Hilleberg Bivanorak over the sleeping bag.

Here's a link to some gear testing I did last year using the Wallcreeper and SOL Thermal Emergency Blankets...

    Hope this helps.

Grand Trunk Hammocks offers a hammock compatible sleeping bag. Too bad it is only available in synthetic insulation, not goose down.

I'm curious if anyone has experience with this bag. The few reviews on amazon are not particularly positive. If this is a good bag, though, the current coupon code they are running for black friday makes this a nice deal.

We bought this Grand Trunk sleeping bag to check it out. Got a good deal, too. Keep you warm to the 40's F. Use it with our Grand Trunk UL or Nano7. Works great and very comfortable. Seems roomy for most guys. Very nicely made. Basically a sleeping bag with a hole in the head and foot end to allow a hammock to slide through. .......A goose down version would of this would be nice.

Or.... buy a nice goose down mummy bag and modify the top and bottom end, like this GT sleeping bag. I think Dark&Stormy wants ideas and suggestions to make his own peapod-style insulation, from the original post. Or, encourage him to just buy something already made?
