What about suspending something underneath the hammock that would conform to your body?

I found this packing material at work that is much thicker than bubble wrap, almost 1".

If the bubbles were connected, the whole thing could be deflated/inflated taking up almost no space. Or would the air inside the bubbles just get cold and freeze you out? The bubbles would probably need to be closer together than shown here so cold air wouldn't flow between each one.

Now that I think of it, I guess this wouldn't work because every time you moved the pad would let any heat out/cold air in. Unless there was a way to keep it tight against the hammock.

    Just thinking out loud here.

At least you'll need some layers. I'm afraid one single layer wouldn't be enough.

If this was a Challenge the rules would be something like the below. It is not a challenge but please feel free.

    • Make an under quilt for a gathered end hammock or a bridge hammock.
    • Size min. ¾ length.
    • It has to keep the average user (not superman) comfortable warm to 57°F 14°C in average wind conditions without any kind of supplement heat source.
    • You are NOT allowed to use down or any kind of synthetic or natural fillings including what you can find in the nature.
    • Packed volume: Has to be equal or less than an equal down under quilt.
    • Weight restriction: None but must be as low as possible.
    • Materials: You are only allowed to use what the common DIY person can buy.
    • Tool restrictions: What the common DIY person has.
    • The under quilts lifespan: Min. 100 x average use including transport between camps (read in a backpack).
    • Setup time on the trail max. 5 minutes.
    • Restrictions for use of tent pegs and bungee cords, none
    • It has to be practical for the common user.
    • Has to fit under a common tarp.
    • Condensation problems must not exited what can be expected from a conventional setup.
    • You are allowed to sew, seal or glue as you see fit.
    • Price range for materials has to be fair.

I hope this is an inspiration to think different it was the intension from the first post.

If Thermarest pads and the like work (while not as well as a UQ) then I wonder why someone hasn't come up with a hammock that has an integrated pad, but with much lighter/better-packing material (which should be fine since it's not being used on the ground with sticks and rocks). The "pad" could be swen between two layers, covering just enough surface to keep a body warm.

I wish you luck in your search, but I honestly don't think you'll find much more than a learning experience from it. If you do succeed, please let the rest of us know; it's valuable information.

    Best of luck!

    Good question.
I think this is a question of demand. There has to be a marked for it before someone like Thermarest take it serious.
BTW air inflated pads with down is available but they are expensive. I can’t recall the brand.

Edit: Exped is the brand name
