    Bugnet/Topcover Zipper Question

I'd like to sew on an integrated bugnet that is completely removable. Any help on how to accomplish this? # 3 or #5 zipper? Do I use a separating zipper? If so I can't seem to find it by the yard that would go all the way around the hammock. Or do you use 2 long ones on each side? Approximately how much would I need for a 10.5 ft hammock? Thanks for any help.

I have had no luck in locating a #3 coil separating zipper long enough to wrap around the entire hammock in the past. I am pretty sure I ran into a few suppliers that can make custom zippers though. Unfortunately I never bookmarked them. I made a few hammocks that had removable tops which worked pretty good but had to use 2 #10 coil zippers to make it work. Now days I just have multiple hammocks. Some have bugnets and some have just top covers. It gives me an excuse to make more hammocks so its a win win.

I am planning to make a hybrid between PapaSmurf's bugnet with the zipper on one end for removal (link) and Fronkey's design with the shockcord bottom (link). That way, I will be able to unzip one end and easily remove the net when I don't want or need it. I'll probably get it done over Christmas when I have some time off. It's not integrated, but might meet the need.

This is the only place I've found long separating #3 coil zippers. Only available in white though. Buy top stops too so you can shorten it to the length you need.

I watched this video and was wondering if he does a rolled hem on the netting or just trims it close.

Not sure how XTrekker does his but I do not roll hem mine. I just run 2 lines of stiches to secure the bugnet to the zipper tape then trim the excess netting (closest to the zipper teeth). For the first stitch line I set the width to 10 stitches per inch and the second line (towards the outside edge of the zipper tape) is set to 8 stitches per inch. Don't know that it makes a difference--it's just how I do it. Have never had any of the netting tear away or separate from the zipper tape. Plus since the unfinished edge of the bugnet is on the inside I'm not too worried about aesthetics/rolling the hem.

I believe he mentions doing it either way. Some people will pin it in place then simply sew and trim close. Others will pin in place in order to get the layout and then unpin one by one, fold/roll and re pin. Would be good idea to mark it first with chalk or something before unpinning..I followed xtrekker's video. I pinned in place and ran a single straight stitch to keep in place. Then I folded over for another stitch. I still had left over that needed trimming. Be very careful when trimming off excess. It's very easy to make a mistake and cut through your finished hammock and or the finished part of netting.
