Moving from full-length to 3/4 or less?

We have a lot of discussion about full vs 3/4 length underquilts, but I'm wondering...

Who actually made the switch from a full length to a 3/4, or even shorter?

Specifically, I'm tempted to try a 20° Phoenix. I like my 20° Incubator, but always looking to shave weight and volume in the pack. I really held out on this one, so we'll see if works for me.

Of course, I would be using a small pad under my legs/feet.

subscribing to this thread... I actually bought a 40 Phoenix earlier this year, and have NOT even hung it yet. It is my intention to use as my Spring/Summer setup to lighten my load, but am interested in what combination of pad(s) I need to use with it.

I have a full length lynx for my wbrr, and made a summer weight 3/4 length quilt last year. Honestly, I wish I had made the summer quilt a full length also. Im 6'4" and it seems like a pain to place a sit pad or whatever under the feet. (just my opinion---the few extra ounces would be worth the convenience!)
FYI: If you want to know what type a certain bear is, sneak up behind it and kick it. Then,
run like crazy and climb up a tree. If the bear climbs the tree and eats you, it's a black
bear. If the bear just pushes the tree over and eats you, it's a grizzly bear : )

Do not walk behind me, for I may not lead. Do not walk ahead of me, for I may not follow. Do not walk beside me, either, just leave me alone.

That was always my thought too. I have a 0° and 20° Incubator, and even had a 40° Incubator but just sold it.

I think I'll buy a Phoenix since I'm just so darn curious though. I can always sell it for close to the sell price; worth satisfying my curiosity and HG addiction, right?

I started out with a Jarbidge which is 58" long, with a Closed Cell Foam pad for my feet. Never had a single problem with it.

I just ordered a Phoenix 20º like you want, which is 6" shorter, and my only concern for my 6'1" self is I might have to buy a slightly longer piece of CCF to keep my feet warm.

Put the pad inside the TQ...no moving around and no condensation.
With a partial UQ you will save a bit of real estate in your pack if you use a lighter and smaller pack. Really that is the main reason I use one.

I go back and forth depending on the trip. Car camping or winter then I am probably using a full length, backpacking or if volume in pack is critical then a partial length quilt with foot pad.

It's all personal preference and you won't know what yours it until you have tried both.

I believe the OHM has a thin pad in the backrest of the pack. Could you replace this thin pad with a thicker pad that could serve as foot pad with partial UQ - or are the dimensions too small?

I only use my full-length 0* Incubator below 15 degrees; it's just not necessary for me above those temps. A 3/4 length suits me fine for all temps above 15 degrees.

Even though I don't have a short UQ yet, I was trying a piece of windshield sun shade material in my TQ. It seemed to work fine but I was indoors. I have used this material in the past to supplement a UQ, so maybe it will work on it's own. Very thin and light, folds easily.

Thanks. That's what I'm thinking, but maybe for temps above 25° for me which is more forgiving on cold feet.
