For tree strap use you really should consider the Dutch clip... Lighter than all those biners mentioned...Finding a set is the rub.

I like the reliability of the gate on a traditional biner, so the Camp Nanos are what I go with and they're only a couple bucks more than minimalist biners like the Trek Lights. Maybe the TL's are just fine, but if they're built with a little metal tab in the pivot to act as a spring then I'd be hesitant. That's how all the light duty (150lb) biners work and the springs in those fail all the time.

Good point. I haven't seen the TL's up close but I have a few of the light duty biners that you mention that have the tab and I've had a couple fail. If TL's are like that I'll be steering clear of those. Never got a response back from CHO on his offer either so I'll probably just grab a pair of Camp Nanos from REI. The Nanos weigh less than half of the boat anchors I'm currently using.

I have a couple of the treklight biners on my bb. they seem to be working just fine. as far as sring failure, when I clip them on, the straps rest on the biner body not the gate. I thought that was the proper way to use them.

Yup. That's the way to use them. It's not a matter of the spring failing under load, just simply failing and then the gate won't be reliable and biners are rated lower with an open gate.

For hammocking yes. for rappelling out of helicopters, they are VERY GOOD.

Just saw this thread and thought I'd chime in. I understand the fear of the gate failing and weakening the strength of the biner, but we've had ours out in the market for over 3 years now and I haven't yet heard of a single gate failure. It doesn't mean it hasn't happened of course but I've yet to see it myself and haven't heard from a single customer who's had a problem with the Trek Light carabiners. Other options may suit your needs, but I see no reason to worry about gate failure on the Trek Light carabiners and if they're constructed similarly I'm sure the other brands (Grand Trunk, Warbonnet, etc.) will be fine for hammock use as well.
