KY - Red River Gorge help

I've never been to the Red River Gorge so I need some help I can't seem to find online.

Can I purchase a parking permit ahead of time? They say available at the district office and local stores, but I'll likely be coming in late in the day when they're closed. Am I SOL?

Another option would be paying at the self-pay sites they mention. Can anyone confirm these trail head locations for me? That would make it a LOT easier.

    Thanks.

When are you coming down? There's a group hang next weekend.

As far as buying your government permission slip, most of us pick ours up at the Slade exit 33 at the shell station. I'm sure they keep decent hours.

Thanks for that info! Being a 5hr drive, I'd probably take a 1/2 day at work and arrive around 6pm to be safe getting a pass.

I don't have anything planned; just doing some homework before next spring most likely. I thought I would start branching out and trying some spots other than northern MI (which is hard since I love it so much!)

Right on. As a matter of fact, we are planning to be around Lake Michigan in January. Gonna try some snow-apocalypse camping

Hope to see you out next weekend!

Sorry I meant when I do visit, I'll leave around noon. But can't make it this weekend.

As for the snow up north, I'm hoping there's a lot since I have 2 snowshoeing trips planned. Last year was a blast with close to 30"!

My bad! I didn't mean this weekend. It's the 12-14th. - December Hammock Hang at RRG on Hanson's Point

The spot we are heading to is just West of Kalamazoo. My buddy is from Traverse City. He said they almost always get 12-14 in. of snow in mid-January.

Yeah you gotta love lake effect snow; high quality stuff! I love waiting for the lake effect snow warnings, pack up, then head out. The drive is the only problem sometimes.

I'm looking forward to doing something different and checking out the RRG!

It's a great place. Lots of trails and the geological area is a must-see at least once in your life.

For the record, I'm pretty sure the shell station is open 24 hour's, so no worries about showing up and not being able to get the pass.

Just remember it's off exit 33. Often easy access to popular area's in the Gorge are off exit 40, so you just need to remember to stop.

If you are interested in company let me know, I have a pretty flexible schedule. Maybe a show & tell of the Gorge in turn for the Deam Wilderness!
