I have backpacked Wildcat hollow several times and love it. However it was before I got a hammock so have always tent camped. water is plentiful and scenery is beautiful with enough hills to make it interesting. I am looking forward to hiking it again with a hammock.

I'll keep an ear to the ground. Things have been pretty crazy but would love to hit a night or two in the woods with you guys.

Def! We should plan a May trip at Zaleski. I have not been to a hang event yet.

I would look forward to a hang in Ohio. I work most Sundays so I would have to know well in advance but I would enjoy it.

Sorry for the late response, but I hope my comments can be useful.

I've done day hikes and backpacking with hammock in Wildcat Hollow. I backpacked it in March, so being overgrown wasn't much of an issue. I liked it, although would be better with potable water available. It felt less remote than Zaleski in some ways (because you cross roads and walk near homes sometimes, and you encounter more oil wells) but at the same time (a) you don't generally see other folks on trail much and (b) you aren't constrained to a few existing camping spots, which also means you can pick better hanging spots and there's lots more fuel available at those hanging spots since camping isn't so concentrated. All considered, I like Wildcat Hollow and other Wayne National Forest trails better than Zaleski despite the good things about Zaleski. But, HYOH.

I second the advice about getting the BPO etrails whereever you go. Very useful. Feel free to PM me if you haven't gone yet and have some specific questions. Meanwhile, a few shots from my hike there.

Either way, you end up by the fire tower and a nice backpackers campground 400 feet back at the cost of $8. Both trails offer one last water fill out of nice creeks before climbing up to the ridge. Gives great practice for the Sawyer Squeeze. I sometimes do the North Trail - Hang - South Trail - Hang and hike down the 3rd morning. Used a lot less than Zaleski but doesn't have as many stop points with a story behind it. Tar Hallow is my new favorite place too hike - second to Zaleski because of the Backpacking Fee. Allows more solitude; unless we see each other there some time...lol. Enjoy Sloth
I know this thread is about "Wildcat Hollow" - but I found it searching for "Tar Hollow". I'm doing my first try at hanging at Tar Hollow April 11 and 12. I purchased all the necessary items and am going to give it a shot. I'm going to try my setup for the first time this weekend (supposed to be in the 50s up here in NW Ohio) at the nearby metro-park to get some of the kinks out. Are there ample hammock spots at the Fire Tower campsite at Tar Hollow? If any of you are there that weekend - I'll be the one who looks like they don't know what they're doing.

The Fire Tower Campsites at Tar Hollow are for Primative "Backpack" Camping. There are not really any "Hammock" Spots at each of the five Designated Sites. It is also hard to tell one site from the next. However, I have hung at the back of camp 120 between two quality trees; as well as the side of 123. I have walked back to camp 125 and there are more potential hang sites surrounding the beat down ground, fire area, and believe it or not - picnic tables of the "tent" area. If you just hang and sleep but don't want the "camping" fire ring experience, there are plenty of trees on the ridge. I would pay for one of the 5 sites and then hang behind it or beyond it, along the ridge line. Also, make sure you carry enough water from below the ridge, as there is no water source up there. There are two nice privy's before you walk back to the campsites; well as nice as privies can be. I have done many overnights and two night stay's at Tar Hollow during the week. I have never seen anyone on the trail or camping other than visitors to the Fire Tower itself. The North and South Trails are each around 12 miles and are a pretty good challange. It is enjoyable to wake up slowly, eat breakfast, break camp and hike down off the Ridge back to the car. You should have a great time! I have marked the calandar; however, in the Spring I often don't decide on a trip until the Friday of that Weekend. P.S. That was the first place I hung after purchasing my WBBB and Edge Tarp.
