Top or Bottom? Where do YOU Use the Most Insulation?

As asked in title: Where do YOU place the greatest emphasis on insulation? More/thicker UQ or TQ?

To date I haven't used an underquilt as I had one not. This is changing for the coming season. Come late winter/early spring I'm trying out a converted kids sleeping bag under me, and/or a PLUQ DIY project ala Derek Hansen's design.

So, chime in. Top or bottom?

Subscribing to this one. I currently use more below, but only out of necessity. I have a Ray-Way DIY quilt I modified with channels to use as an UQ. Supposedly it is good to 20 I think. Right now I am using a Lamina 35 degree bag as a TQ. Both are synthetic. When it gets cold, I just put more clothes on. Hoping to DIY a down TQ & UQ this winter. Just need to save for the materials.

I'm curious as well if there is a rule of thumb to this... or one that could be developed with enough feedback.
I'm noticing a 5-10 degree (or more) swing from bottom to top needed.

I always go with a more insulating bottom than top. Remember: your UQ isn't just under you, it's on the sides as well.

How do you define most? My bottom insulation is rated for colder weather than my top but the top is bigger and weighs more. I have a torso length WB Yeti underquilt rated for 20*. On top I use a 40* synthetic mummy bag. Add my pillow and home made polyethylene foam leg pad and the under insulation is far smaller and lighter than the top. I do, however, want the bottom warmer. Even when I save up for a proper down topquilt, it will still be a lot bigger than my Yeti.

I run a 20 bottom and the top ranges from a 20 to a 50 to nothing but my silk sleep wear.
