I'm using a carabiner as my toggle. I can also hang bags and stuff from them once they are tightened. Works good, and how much does a small biner weigh??

One of the dinky cheapies, if that's what you mean, weighs 4.6g by my scale.

How does the amsteel Blue work for flossing? Does it result in Smurf gums?

the blue comes off pretty easily, after all before I put those toggle in I turn one end into a firestick, and those prongs are rough. When I'm done using that for oral hygiene why I can just use it to start a fire.

No, the blue isn't the issue. It's those dang little fibers from the Amsteel that get in between the teeth. Good thing I carry floss too so I can anchor the bury on in-the-field eye splices, otherwise I'd go nuts with my tongue exploring that fuzz.

I know it's a little long, but any reason a section of a trekking pole wouldn't work in a pinch (couldn't find a trail stick)? I would think I could always find a trail stick, but I would also feel better knowing I had a plan B.

The trekking pole will surely be strong enough. But...

if the loop in your cord is small and fixed (e.g., eye-splice in a UCR) then chances it could be a little tricky getting the loop around the toggle. Doable if you hitch the pole close to one end, pass the loop over the other end, bring down to the hitch and pass around the other end of the pole. Doable but delicate.

But with a whoopie sling with a big enough loop that won't be a problem. Or if you tie a loop around the toggle.

Couldn't you just slip the webbing through the small fixed loop and tie the hitch below it? Then you wouldn't have to slip it over the toggle.

That is exactly what I use. I usually carry one or two of those really cheap caribiners with me for attaching something or rather to a pack or something else. Iam obviously using the back of the caribiner (opposite the gate) and I have seen no indication that they are being stressed at all. Like Gargoyle said, then you can hang stuff from them.

The beauty of the Marlinspike Hitch is its easily tied, but more importantly, it is easy to remove. It does not appear to weaken or wear the rope as well. IMO. I dont think the webbing (used as a spike) would supply enough surface area or rigidity for the knot to work properly.

Single Chopstick, another reason I went to the carabiner/spike....I did not like the tent stake dangling about, waiting to impale my eyeball.
Safety first...I always say...right after I stab myself....on the way to the med center...

Slip the webbing through the fixed loop.

Form the spike hitch below the loop.

Insert toggle of choice.


I was just saying that way if you HAD to use your hiking pole as a toggle, you wouldn't have to slip the loop around the toggle.

If I am not careful I might be stuck with a new trail name.. The weird thing is that it isnt a chopstick lol.

I am thinking the slug may not work for the toggle. Maybe Grizz and figure out the math on that one..
