Thermarest ??

When you use a thermarest or thermarest style pad in your hammock, for me a double layer BB, do you leave valve open, or closed?

Closed, but just ever so slightly underinflated (conforms for better comfort). If you leave the valve open it will compress & not insulate.

Just a little air trapped in the pad. Play with how much inflation for a custom fit. I found a thin peice of fabric wrapped around pad let it breathe better,sweatback syndrome for me. A small fleece pillowcase for the pad would work awesome. Hold the pad when getting in, it likes to twist.

I shut the valves (there's 2 on my EXPED). Put it inside my hammock. Get inside myself and ever so slightly, open one of the valves to let out a little air until the pad feels the most comfortable. Then shut it. I like to have the valves at my head end so I can adjust the air if I need to. In the morning before getting up, I open both valves. With my weight on the pad, the air goes out really fast and the bottom gets cool, quick!!

I let it self inflate (just open the valve and let it sit), then I close the valve and put it in. It works for me perfectly.

What temp does a typical thermorest get you down to? I would thing that a cc pad would be warmer

I've been to 40F with only a thermarest as bottom insulation and it was fine. I think it would be as warm as a CCF pad.

wouldn't the temp ratings be different for the different kinds of therma-rests? Some of them are pretty thick.
