    Brand Spanking Newbie Here

    Hi all,

I've never been in a hammock but I have made the decision that I will never sleep on the ground again.

I'm in research phase of deciding what hammock gear to put together...doing lots of research and trying to learn from others' experiences.

    I'll be lurking for awhile!

Welcome. How tall are you? Looking at your gear list with ? Marks, Blackbird is real nice but if you are over 6' consider the XLC. I also like Hammeck Envy with a top cover and everyone seems to like to fully customize a Dream Hammock.

Superfly is a great deal for providing all weather protection. Insulation would be UGQ, Hammock Gear, JRB, or if you want to save money first, look into Arrow Head Equipment, KAQ.

    Good luck.

I'm 5'6". The only time in my life I was ever warm camping was when I had a standard size twin air mattress with a propane heater going most of the night.. lol, almost not camping. I'll likely never be in weather colder than high 40s so I'm thinking the 0° quilts. I'm thinking about the superfly because doors sound warmer. I even keep a heating pad at the foot of my bed just because I love heat.

I'm hoping to make the best decision possible first over saving money. I would really like to have gear that I'm so happy with I don't want to replace it. I'm keeping my eye on the things the experienced folks are very happy with in hopes of making that happen.

My next concern is if all this might fit in a 3360 cubic inch pack.

I'm at least weeks from making a final purchase decision so all advice will be appreciated. I know I've got a learning curve ahead of me but I expect it will be an enjoyable one.

Hello and welcome! Lots of good info and helful people here. There also many great cottage vendors so getting quality gear is not difficult. Can't go wrong with a Warbonnet hammock and tarp for sure. I can speak from experience that Underground quilts are great but again, other vendors such as Hammock Gear are great as well. It's hard to narrow things down but keep researching and asking questions.

Welcome. Take your time and explore. Info overload is quite possible. If you have any questions, just ask. Someone will chime in with an answer.

    Welcome from the PNW!

As far as picking a hammock, you might want to contact some of your local HF members and try out their rigs. Or attend one of the annual Hammock Hangs in your area - For example, there's one in Oregon in January. We usually have one in Eastern Washington in February.

I've owned over 20 hammocks, including Clark, Warbonnet, TTTG, Dream Hammock, ENO, Grand Trunk, Kammok, Byer & DIY. I'm your height & I still prefer a double layer hammock which is about 11' long, despite the slight weight penalty.
