    Sil Question

So I have quite a few yards of sil left over from making two tarps and a few sacks. and I can lighten my load by going to sil for a ground cloth and making a gear hammock/ground cloth/pack cover combo but my question is to those that have used sil as a ground cloth before. How did it do in rainy weather? does the water wick through the sil and wick into your pack? I know I can just hang in gear hammock mode if the weather gets bad but was just wondering before cutting into this project.

Sil is a vapor barrier and will work fine as a ground cloth - I sweat where I lie on it, but I rather use a separate sheet of gore-tex for a ground sheet. My pack cover/pack hammock is made from sil and keeps the pack dry - except where it leaks between my back and the backpack. I use a plastic bag inside my pack to keep everything dry.

It depends on the sil, they are not all the same. Personally I would test it out by standing on the sil laid out on wet grass.

^^^What he said. Just how waterproof the sil is is calibrated by a hydrostatic head rating. Some sil will be waterproof in a light rain but not in a downpour. How much pressure it will take before it leaks is determined by the rating. Most sellers will provide that rating in their specs on the sil for sale.
