    $40 Underquilt

    Hey guys,

New to the forum here and have been researching making a climashield underquilt. I'm a stingy college student so I'm thinking of making an underquilt with 2 yards of 1.1 ripstop and 1 yard of 5.0 climashield apex, making the total cost about $40. The rolls come in 60" widths so I would be using that as my length for the underquilt with a width of 36". Is this too small? I'm about 5'10" and weigh 150. I would like to be comfy in the 30's and a bit lower with extra layers including by down top quilt. Thanks for the help!

    Yes, 36" is too narrow.

Get 2 yards of the 5.0 and make it 72x44 inches. It will keep you nicely warm with no regrets down the road.

These are the two I found. Ripstop by the roll charges $10 for shipping on insulation I believe though, I'm not sure about thru-hiker.

I use the same build concept for my UQ.

The yard of fabric is the UQ width, finished about 33". It's not too narrow or short for me, but, I sleep so good in the hammock, I hardly move. So, when it's adusted, it's done.

I would recommend a double layer if your going below 40*F though. And some go with 3 or 4 layers depending on how they sleep and how low the temp they hang in.

I made mine with a Walmart fabric of Maylar infused polyester batting roll. 2 yards cut in off-center half to layer up with a small gap between the layers. 2 yards of fabric wrapping around the batting. Has gotten me down to 23*F at the bottom of comfort for me. It doesn't stuff well, so, I fold it and roll it up.

Good luck to you if you plan on going this route. And, take pics of your finished UQ.
Enjoy and have fun with your family, before they have fun without you

Thanks for the suggestions! I think I may just do it and see how it goes. If its not warm enough for the cooler weather I'll have a nice summer UQ then! I may look into that maylar batting but I don't want it to get too bulky so we'll see.

This is related but might be a little off subject. My cheap underquilt is a SOL survival blanket that I attached another cheaper Mylar sheet to with contact cement. You leave one side unattached so you can stuff a pad, reflectix, what have you, in there. I use a free lightweight car windshield reflector. Then you gather the ends, tie with para cord, and loop through hammock suspension with a taught line hitch. I also just got a Klymit LWD that I'm gonna slightly inflate and sleep on top of in my hammock. Add a sleeping bag of choice and you're gold.

If you haven't already ordered, Outdoor Wilderness Fabrics also carries it and are wonderful to work with.

    Hope it helps!
