Anyone have experience hiking pictured rocks? I'm curious about the shuttle and an off trail spot to camp the night before. Looking to go the 3rd or 4th weekend in June.
Will either of the shuttles drop at Au Sauble lighthouse without an extra charge? Where to spend the night before the shuttle if you are driving in?
I've stayed the night at Northland Outfitters in Germflask. This will give you plenty of time to arrive at PIRO HQ to get permits and lecture. Look for Altran info on the Web, either a # or email address. Sorry I can't help with that part.
Another shuttle options is Tom Funke's operation, Trailspotters ( http://trailspotters.net/ ). FYI, there is no backcountry (ie off trail) camping allowed in PIRO. There is a campground in Grand Marais that has walk-in sites available for hikings setting off into the Lakeshore. Watch out for mosquitos! My daughter and I were driven out of the backcountry after 2 days of a 4 day trip when we went the 2nd weekend of June 2013. I was up through there in July this past year, just in time for the black flies. It's hit and miss up there! I've done the same thru-hike in the fall and it was wonderful.

Thanks for the heads up on bugs. We will be sure to give everything a good permethrin soak and bring the netting and deet.
