    Intro from PA

Hey everyone. I just got my hammock today, the Yukon Outfitters hammock with bugnet that was on Woot.com. I have been lurking around and soaking up all of the useful info on here and I am learning a bunch, but the wealth of information on here sure is overwhelming for a newb trying to figure this stuff out. I am getting there though.

I am not really an experienced camper but I am really excited to get some trips in this coming year because it's something I have wanted to do for a long time. My girlfriend and I are looking at taking a few days to a week this March to get out and backpack somewhere, possibly the MD section of the AT. I am in the western Philadelphia burbs in Chester County and I see there is some activity a little bit west of me with some group hangs which seem really cool.

I am currently trying to figure out what type of suspension to use with my new hammock since it is pretty bulky. I was thinking of just using some nylon tree straps and making or purchasing whoopie slings and attaching using the toggle method. Does anyone have experience with this hammock, or one like it, that has the channel built in - and is it safe to run a whoopie through it versus some of the other methods like a continuous loop or just rolling up the end of the hammock and tying it on? I know there are tons of options but I thought this might be the simplest to run as a beginner. When I figure that out I can move on to ridgelines a tarp setups.

OK, this was a lot more than I planned on writing but it's great to have this resource and I hope to learn a lot more. Thanks all.

West Chester! Wow! My family and I are in Upper Providence (Montco) near Oaks.

I'm not an expert, either, I mean at hammock camping. I am an experienced backpacker but with tents. And I like knots, and DIY projects, and tend to go down the rabbit hole pretty deep. After looking at all the possible ways to suspend a hammock I came to the conclusion that the ENO Atlas Straps are likely to work just fine and end up being cheaper in the end than anything I'd try to put together. Then the guy who "wrote the book" did this post on his blog ...

    Done, came today. Get some.

Done like dinner. Then get the book.

Good luck! I just got my gear and spend most of my time in Chicago, but maybe we'll hook up at a group hang back in Phily.

Glad you made the trip over from PMC. If you're OCD like me, you can go ahead and count on hours and hours of browsing time.

Hey, gps! Thanks so much for the link to the forum and Dejoha's site and the book! I'm on my way! Got the gear now, but probably not going to start with a winter hang (too old for that now, rather drink beer in my recliner when it's snowing ). I hope to do a group hang in the spring either in Chicago or Philly.

    Thanks for steering me right!

P.S. Oh, and yes, I am

Were not far either. Welcome BROTHER!

This is my main summer hammock. I have whoopies on mine and they work great. Just pull the fixed loop end through with the rope installed currently and secure the whoopie sling with a larks head. Perhaps also search on the forum here for the Speedhook, a newer suspension idea that is intriguing. I've done a few mods also check out this thread; https://www.hammockforums.net/forum/...e-Modification

Give a shout if you find a question.

Welcome. I am right down the road from you so if you have any questions and want to see some different options you can PM me. I am not familiar with that hammock but can help with seeing the difference between straps and whoopies.

Do check out the group hangs. There will be a lot of people with many different setups to check out.

If you do the MD section of the AT it is probably one of the easiest sections to hike and hang and a good place to start.
