    Tarp Attachment to ridgeline methods

Hi everybody, had a question. My biggest problem is tieing my tarp up, takes forever, and never works the way i want it to. I have a maccat deluxe in spinn. Thinking i need to add a ridgeLINE to the tarp to make things easier. I read this post from GRIZZ:

    http://www.hammockforums.net/forum/s...80&postcount=7

I would like to do this, but am having trouble getting started and visualizing it.

Also, what kinda ropes/cords and hardware will i need for this job.

    Thanks for starting this thread!
I would like to add one more question if I may....

    Q. What are the pro/cons to setting this up as an over hung Vs under hung.

I know that if I place my tarp over this ridge line I risk water migrating down the line and under the tarp during a downpour. This is easily remedied with drip lines.
A second consideration may be frictional wear cause by the tarp rubbing against this cording. Going with the under hung eliminates this wear but may introduce other stresses.
How do you all select between these two options and what advantages to each offer to you that the other lacks.
    Thanks

    yep

I tighten the attachments up so that rubbing is minimal. Haven't noticed wear due to that.

I went to this configuration because of pull-strain I saw on the the tarp ridge tie-out tabs, stretch holes in the tarp. So for that tarp anyway I put it over the line to take as much strain off the tabs as I can. Another reason I have the cord under is so that I have a ridge-line to hang things from, e.g., the hiking socks. Some of my hammocks don't have ridgelines, and my BBs have internal ones---those socks are staying outside!!! A couple of my DIY bridge hammocks have a bugnet that gets pulled up a little over my head, and so I need a line up there to which I can attach the elastic cord from the bugnet.

    Hey Grizz,
Thanks for the above and thanks also for all of your contributions to this board. I have picked up many a fine tip from your posts.

I mocked up a set of microbiners that are attached via prusik knots to my main line. So far I have only tried over hung for many of the reasons you mention. I like using this as a line for hanging and organizing gear in No seeum ridgeline bags.
I was wondering if I was possibly missing out on something by not trying the under hung method.

I have been using a cheep Big Box store version of paracord for my main line with Small dia. Spectra Like line I had left over from my Stunt kite flying days for the Prusik .

Surprisingly this fake paracord seems to work Ok despite all of the caveats here against using it.
I did a burn test on it and it comes closest's to some type of acrylic?
    3 bucks for 50'.
In all fairness however it has yet to see heavy rain and could possible stretch when soaked. I will likely replace it with something known to work as I move forward with this.

    Thanks for the speedy response.

on a related note, I would love to see a picture of the ridgeline side tied to the tree with the figure 9. If someone can point me to one that would be greatly appreciated.

Sorry. I meant to also ask for a pointer to a picture of the dripline on the ridgeline cord. Again thanks for the help.

Sorry, all I can help with right now is a mental picture.
    • close your eyes
    • imagine a cotton woven shoelace
    • imagine that shoelace cut in two equal length pieces
    • imagine one of those pieces, tied in an overhand knot on the ridgeline
    • imagine sliding that overhand knot to be positioned directly under the tarp's ridgeline tab

So being repetitive, if anyone has pics of the setup grizz was describing in the link i posted, please post them (or describe in your own words), so the non-eagle scouts can figure it out, thanks.
