This is a great event to attend. I went for the first time this year and can't wait for next year's now that it's in the planning phases. I'm definitely going to get a warmer base layer to bring with me this time, though. The lightweight base layet I wore last year didn't quite cut the proverbial mustard.

The Red Barn is the Overmountain shelter, it's a bit south of where we are likely going. The Wise & Old Orchard are North of Damascus on the AT, Over Mt is South of Damascus. BUT, Over Mt may be a do-able site.

How far is the closest road to Overmountain Shelter? Is that road passable in most cars or is 4WD necessary? Is there plenty of hanging area? At least we know the shelter is big enough for folks to hang out in.

There is ample hanging available, over a large area. The spring is close, the shelter is HUGE, the privy is open air. Don't know about roads, but you can see a house about a mile away that seems to be on or at least near, the access (Dirt) road to the shelter.

If you're talking about the red barn Overmountain shelter, I thought it was in NC. Between Carvers Gap and 19E. It's a 5 mile hike to the shelter from Carvers Gap. I know there is a dirt/gravel road that's near the spring, but not sure where it's accessed.

I'll vote with majority on this hang. Sounds fun. Though I need to work on getting my hammock ready for a winter hang.

Maybe Overmountain isn't such a bad idea then. I know I'm game for a 5 mile hike in.
