Certainly understand your concern but most of the places I camp there are no other people around. If someone came across it I have no doubt they would leave it undisturbed- it's a respect sort of thing that's still celebrated in some places-
Frankly- who camps where you have to worry about someone stealing? If I have to worry about my stuff I am in the wrong place or didn't hike in far enough.

O&B, may I ask, how big is your pack? I can't "loosely stuff" both my quilts and then have anything like enough room left for the rest of my gear.

Mine go in a large nylon bag in the bottom of my pack.

I stuff both mine in a pack liner, but I have to stuff them pretty good. Not compressed with straps or anything, but a good deal of muscle to get them small enough.

I'm also starting to wonder about this and my Osprey Atmos 65 pack. After stuffing, there's really no way to keep it "flat" so this big ball of down makes my pack deep (hanging further off my back) than lighter gear. I wish there was a way to keep the load closer to my body. Straps on the pack only do so much.

If you are going to use a stuff sack or other bag to compress I suggest the five string stuff sacks from Kifaru. (Kifaru.net) They will have a video on the site explaining how they work. They compress bags/quilts... into a more manageable shape imo. You don't wind up with a heavy ball but more of a tight bedroll which I think is a more usable shape-

I've been stuffing both of my quilts into a Outdoor Research dry bag since I can compress the quilts much more than with the flimsy stuff sacks; they're also protected from rain as well.

I also use the trash compactor bag as a pack liner. My extra/spare clothes go in the very bottom followed by my top quilt stored very loosely in a stuff sack and my underquilt goes on top/beside that. Hammock then goes on top of all the previous items. I try to pack so my items will be in order when I'm unpacking.

When I'm unpacking, I am able to know which quilt I am grabbing by feel. Most often, I will put my top quilt in my hammock in the stuff sack until I'm completely set up.

Both quilts AND the hammock (in it's bishop bag) go in a big drybag at the bottom of my pack. During a longer (a week or two) trip I just throw boh quilts in to the hammock, zip the netting up, and everything goes in the drybag like a big bedroll.

Trash bag is a grat, cheap and lightweight idea but I like to partition and organize my kit with drybags. So one big one for the sleep system, medium for clean clothes and wash kit, and another medium for fleece and my shell. All that in the bottom half of my bag.
Everything else is not afraid of moisture (fe cook kit) and goes on top loose so I can grab what I need without fighting plastic.
