I've never been a moderator on a forum and this one seems to be very well run. Can someone help us understand how much more work would be involve for a mod if subforums are added? How diligent are they about categorizing posts in subforums. If a thread on recipes ended up in a General Camp Kitchen forum, would they be expected to take time to move it?

I think the subforums would be useful to me but I might reconsider my view if that type of thing added additional burden to the mods who do are doing a good job.

I'm not a mod but I'll add some thoughts.

I doubt the creation of a subforum is that difficult. Moving some threads around is a bit of work, but I'm sure those interested in this subforum could assist with identifying the threads.

The challenge is having a balance between a ton of subforums (which I am not suggesting this thread is advocating) vs. a select # of subforums.
An example of a forum with a lot (in my opinion) of subforums is WhiteBlaze.

    http://www.whiteblaze.net/forum/forum.php?

If you wanted to find out about info on recommendations for females using a shelter on the JMT you'd have about 4 different places you could look - Female Hiking Forums, Straight Forward, JMT, and shelters. This is part of why SilvrSurfr argues against more subforums. More doesn't necessarily equal better.

In this case, my own personal opinion is this one seems worthy, but I still think it should start out as a thread, like the "female' oriented subforum suggestion started as. Maybe we can axe an old subforum so the universe stays in balance.

Oh, I think it would be a ton of work to move 3,300 threads and 60,000 posts from Camp Kitchen into various subforums. I don't think anybody is going to do that (mods, correct me if I'm wrong). So the Camp Kitchen subforums would only make life easier for new threads, and do nothing for nine years worth of threads (336 per year) that already exist. So in one year, 10% of Camp Kitchen threads will be "easier to find." Wow, that will make my life easier, almost 10% easier! And in two years, my ability to find things will have improved by 20 percent!

This reminds me somewhat of the "like button" that is suggested every so often. The suggester argues that it would make his life easier, because he values the opinions of those who like to click on "like" buttons. However, HF has 1.4 million posts, and only the ones going forward would have the wonderful utility of being able to search by posts that people "liked." Nobody is going back and reviewing 1.4 million posts to decide if they "like" them. Even after 9 more years of "like" you'd still have half of all HF posts that were not ranked with "like."

I am glad we are at least able to have a friendly discussion on the subject as to the pros and cons. Much better than on White Blaze.
