    New England hang 30-31 October

    Hey all,

I have been watching carefully at all the hangouts being planned and I was wondering if there was a get together in New England?

I'm going to be at Amherst MA on business 10/28 and 10/29. I might could be interested in a hang at least 10/30 in western Mass or Southern NH or VT. Someone who knows a place would have to organize though...

I live in southern NH and would love to join up. Have to check with my calendar--er, wife--but late October would probably work for me. My wife works for State Parks and just told me that Monadnock would be a good bet; it's open for camping year round and would probably be warmer and milder than further north. Not too far a drive from Amherst, MA either.

    you can bring dessert!

I lived in Cornish NH a while ago, but did most of my hiking then further north (with an occasional afternoon jaunt up Mt. Ascutney). Never went up Monadnock, would like to.

Looking at the Monadnock State Park site it seems that for the last week in October there are 21 campsites available, all on a first-come-first-serve basis. $25/night, 2 cars limit per site, 2 adults and 2 children per site. Daily use fees on top of that. Those rules seem to apply to all the NH state parks.

Hmm, Live Free and Die Broke

Another option. The AT passes through Hanover. About a mile north is the Velvet Rocks shelter. It's a little bit of a scramble to get up there, but it is a nice location with an ample number of hanging trees, water source is another quarter mile away. For a day hike a stroll farther north on the AT is nice, not especially exciting at that point but pleasant. Or make an expedition (by car---it's 25 miles) over to Mt. Cardigan, which has the best views for shortest distance hiked that I know in the area. It is a bit strenuous getting up there, but not technical.

    jest thinking out loud here...

hey that's were i am about a 2 minuet walk from the trail head in town, I almost went up to velvet rocks today but plans changed I alos hiked cardigan the summer before the one that just/is ending/ended and he is right it was so awesome that was running between the peaks Im convinced the best way to do it is to traverse the line of growing peaks up to it. from (these could all be wrong) little sugar loaf tp bear (something) to sugar loaf to fire screw to cardigan. also there is a park on cardigan that has spots i don't know exactly where they are or how nice they are but there are campsites.

I'm glad you are! Those are all great suggestions and I would be up for just about any of them. I think the Velvet Rocks Shelter sounds best to me. If people are interested we could try to get something put together for this fall if not we can push back till spring breaks though.

    Which would you all prefer?

I'd like to get out for a trip if it's not too ungodly cold. Velvet Rocks works fine for me, depending on the actual date.

Monadnock is $25 per night for 2 + $11 per each additional. No additional day fees that I know of. NH State Parks doesn't get any money from the State and are entirely funded by fees. You know the deal; folks don't want to pay the. taxes and don't want to pay the fees, but they *do* want the services and upkeep. Ah well, off soapbox.
