Honestly you want to stay away from duck down if you can afford to. It will always have an odor to it. Goose down it the way to go and the higher the fill power the better.

One of those can be placed under your top quilt (done in this manner to avoid compressing the down) and will add ~20* to ~30* of warmth. Another two things to keep an eye out for are the polypro long underwear that they sell (incredibly warm for the price tag, but heavy--especially compared with the polyester grid fleeces now on the market) and the M65 jacket and pant liners (also heavy, but definitely the cheapest [list price, at least] and most durable puffy clothing on the market--they use the same material as the poncho liners, but semi-tailored for your body).

    Hope it helps!

I picked a poncho liner up today. Haven't had time to mess with it but at least I have that option now

Some of my best friends are ducks and I find this offensive.

It's surprisingly thinner than I expected.

I believe it'll be a nice addition to my kit no matter what. Additional insulation in colder weather or a light "blanket" in warmer weather

I've been using one as my primary top insulation for a couple of years. I've found, for me, that it's good in an hammock down into the low 40s. On the ground, I can extend that to about freezing before it's too uncomfortable to sleep under. For most folks (I'm an enormously warm sleeper), my recommendation would be for 45* to 50* as a lower comfort limit.

Hence my "20 to 30 degrees warmth" added comment above when using one in conjunction with a second top quilt.

    Hope it helps!

Go to the local Walgreens or CVS and snatch a few of their 3 for $10 fleece blankets. Lay 2 of them out one on top of the other and sew up the 2 long sides, and one short side. Voila, you have a fleece sleeping bag insert. This makes a great summer bag as well when used alone.
