Thanks for all the insights. Gives me lots to think about.
One of the reasons for wanting a diamond shape is only needing 2 tie outs. Simplicity in the field and that's the only thing that will work when hanging on my patio.
I have been using an 8x8 in a diamond configuration for now. By using the poles from my 'full inner hoop' pole mod I can get clearance on the spreader bars by either going 'corner to corner' across the width with one pole or by going 'crisscross' diagonally with two poles. The drawback is that the distance from corner to corner on the 8x8 is longer than the poles I am using on my Superfly so I have to cobble up some connections.
I'll have to give some serious consideration to a hex with pole mods - the downside is needing 4 tie outs and not being able to use it on the patio. Maybe a cheap Yukon Outfitters diamond for the patio - I can always run for cover if needed.

A couple of options that should both be under 12 oz. Jared will do custom work, the paragon is $99 and the Asym is $59. I had a Hennessy Asym diamond that worked well and have a tiny diamond for fairer weather I picked up from Hennessy during their sale but I don't think they offer that one as a normal item. It weighs under 7 oz with guys. You may be better served with an asym design in the rain.

Paragon Tarp is a classic diamond tarp for use over your hammock. The simple design allows easy set up with 2 standard tie outs.
