Indeed, it's a great thought. That's just a lot to try to lug around. BYOF is a great plan for a float (unless someone is coming by canoe..in which case, knock your socks off).

Even with a canoe, I don't want to haul DO's and all the crap which would go with. My hat is off to Lewis and Clark who went across the continent and only came back with two manufactured items which they left with, their firearms and their cast iron!
Still, I will settle for my Camp Chef and PAck-it-Gourmet. So much easier.

Does anyone, with some canoe/kayak experience, and who is planning to attend, have a ham radio license and an HT? I would like to set up a lead boat, a trail boat and, perhaps, one or two "shepherd boats" in the middle. We could probably use FMRS/GMRS too.
...and this is only if we get quite a few more folks to join in.
I just want to make certain that folks, who are new to this, have someone who knows where they are going and who can call for help in the event of trouble.

Yeah, I know, it is a ways off but I am thinking ahead!

My apologies, I do not mean to seem too "negative." I actually anticipate a great time. Just trying to plan ahead and see to it that bases are covered.
I have had some folks (new paddlers, with kids and all) ask about such things as, "will there be someone to show the way?"
Really? It's a RIVER, go downstreem until you see the lead boat pulled up! No, seriously, I could see someone missing boats pulled up at some stops, especially at dusk. Also, it is just a good idea to know where the tail end is.
I am planning on a nice, relaxed float/hang. Lots of fishing, lots of wading to cool off, and perhaps some snoozing as I float along. LOL

I may have to come down for this! I was looking at doing a canoe trip down the shenandoah this summer, and just saw this.

I've got a DIY skin canoe that I will take through class 1 or 2 rapids, but not 3. It can easily carry two and a pile of gear, and also is easy to portage around. I've also got a bunch of kayaks i can choose from.

This sounds like an awesome adventure. I do not know if I will be able to do it or not but I will be trying to find ways...

Oh, while thinking about "planning," there is good fishing on this river and GREAT photo ops. Just a thought.
You may have to paddle around cattle though.....not kidding there.....
