    ODH, 1st Old Shenendoah Float/hang

    Who; The Old Dominion Hangers

What; Our 1st Old Shenendoah float/hang.

When; The morning of the 26th - the afternoon of the 28th of June 2015

Where; The South fork of the Shenendoah River from Bixlers bridge to at least Mile 13 at Comptons rapids. We may go further depending on interest between now and June but, for now we are planning to take out just past Comptons.

How; Sign up on the spreadsheet, https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets...Dc4/edit#gid=0
Be prepared to meet some basic requirements. 1) you have to have, or have access to a suitable canoe or kayak. Please see the description below. 2) life vest/jacket, CG approved. 3) camping gear which you can bring along. See description. 4) food and water or filter.

    Description, The "meat and potatoes."
Ok, this is not a bad stretch of river, I have been up it a few times myself. IMHO it is good for paddlers with some experence under their belts. There are class one and two rapids along the route and some good fishing. Cpmptons rapids are class 3 but you may choose to portage around them. There is poison oak and poison ivy at some of the stops but I, myself, am highly allergic and I managed to avoid it so....
Now, there are no bathrooms, no running water and this is not a hang where we wil lbe able to haul along dutch ovens, coolers and tons of food. It is pretty much a "backpacking trip" except on water. I take "pack-it-gourmet" or "camp chow" meals myself and I did filter river water with a Sawyer filter. I'm still alive and did not end up pukeing my guts out! For legal reasons, I do not say that I recomend it though, just that I did it and that I shall do so again.
If you attend be aware that there is no cost but we will need you to participate in the car shuttle set up, moving people, and possibly boats, back and forth so that everyone will be able to get to vehicles from the finish point. This aspect will be well planned out so that no boats are left unsecured and everyone has rides.
I will be working the details out as we get closer and as I know who and what we have to work with but these are the basics. Woo hoo!

I should also mention that this is a "do at your own risk" event. You are aware of your own capabilites, I and the rest of the ODH membership are not. Just FYI.

CoreyR, if you'd like to borrow my 10" GSI dutch oven (it has no feet) for this adventure you may. It's in it's own little case, and it's pretty lightweight. You can prop it over a fire with rocks, and cook for 5-10 people depending on what ya cook. Check with me at the next hang we have together and you can look at it.

I appreciate it Hotlips but I think we are going to stick with the "pack your own food"plan. Some of the stops may not be very accessible by car. This is sort of like a hike in that you must pack it in and "group feed"really doesn't work for that.

Believe me, I already tried to wedge my aluminum DO into my kayak!

I agree with Corey on this one. Most of us are verry limited as to what we can get in our boats. I also like the idea of cook for your self plan, not every group gathering needs to have a group meal. Sometimes it just complicates things.
