I've searched the rules and all I could find is that you cant use anything that screws into a tree like treestand spikes or nails for lanterns. I'm going to try and email them to see if they can give any kind of clarification as to what's acceptable.

I sure wouldn't want to put a lot of time into putting a hang together and then show up and not be able use a hammock.

But I do have a comment... I believe that attaching anything to trees is prohibited in Missouri State Parks... It would be a real bummer if everyone showed up for a hang & the park rangers made everyone set up on the ground.

An option might be to reserve a "group site" which groups like the scouts or church groups use... I believe that the rules of where & how to set up are alittle more relaxed in those areas of the state parks...
We would need at least 20 people to reserve a group site. Maybe if this was a 2nd or 3rd annual Hangout and more people were involved then a group site makes sense.

I'm also looking into a National Forest campground that is centrally located as a 2nd choice in case I find out hammocks are a no-no in Missouri state parks. They are a lot of times more flexible.

I was just at the Cedar Creek Trailways and they didn't seem to mind. I called ahead to be sure...

Also, just a quick question. My backpacking and camping buddys are my 9 year old son and my 6 year old Golden Retriever. Now, I do not know if this is a family event sutiable for a kid and a dog. So, the question is should I leave them at home or are others bringing pets / kids? And my dog is well trained and I would say better than my son...

Thanks, and hope to see everyone there...

I would like to make the hang. However, had planned on Minesota hang and can not be in two places at one time. Not sure if I can make two weeks in a row either.

you might want to ask if that is "permanently attached" that is prohibited. Take some tree huggers to show the rangers and you might get a waiver. Just a thought.

    Try for it

Do you have the name of the area you will be? I'd like to give it a try. I'm finishing up teaching a Wilderness Medic course the previous weekend (later date) . But I hope to have get up and go to come to this event. My hammock will warmed and well used by this time after the Wilderness medic course.
How many time have you heard.......? "nice hammock what about when there are no trees?"

Feel free to bring your "camping buddys".

I've never had any problems either and have had the ranger at the site talking about trail conditions and other things and they never said anything. So I say we go for it and just be good park patrons and not draw unwanted attention. The great thing about hammock campers is that we are a versatile bunch and when presented with a problem we adapt and overcome.

I was looking at the campground map and was looking at section 4 which is next to the water and does have trees a plenty to hang from. I have to think the only competition for camp sites we are going to have with out reserving any will be from campers checking out the fall foliage and not all the campers that would normally go there to be on the water. I don't think we will have enough campers to worry about reserving sites but if in the next week there is a surge of people interested in being there then I'll look into reserving 2 - 4 campsites that are next to each other and then settle up with everyone later.
