Help me choose - Incubator 0 or 20 and should I get overfill

    Hi,
I'm shopping for my first commercial underquilt and right now it looks like it will be an Incubator. I'm trying to decide between the 0 and 20 and if I should get overfill. I'm a 4 season camper. Most of my camping is in the central Sierras and the coastal mountains of California. I live in the Santa Cruz Mountains and camp out on my property a lot. Actually in the last 3 1/2 weeks I've slept outside every night except 2 nights. Most of my camping would be in above freezing temps but I also do sub-freezing trips and I do snow camp occasionally. For the cold trips temps are usually in the teens to 20s but sometimes down to around 0. I've never hammock camped in the snow but I plan to. I used to be a hot sleeper but now I seem to be a cool sleeper. I only want to buy one underquilt. Warm gear I own – Western Mountaineering Flight Down Pants, GoLite Roan Plateau 800 Hooded Jacket and Goose Feet Down socks for additional warmth. Any recommendations or tips on which one to get and if I should get overfill are appreciated
    Thanks
    Rick

I would recommend the 20F Incubator with 2 oz overfill. This is my most used quilt and with a pad to supplement it has taken me to single digit temperatures in comfort.

20° +1 or 2oz over. If you need more, just add a pad on those rare occasions.

20º +2oz ... I was quite warm in mine at 11º with just some long-johns and wool socks.

If you have a true expectation of being at zero temps at some point, and its the only UQ you own, then I would say go ahead and get the zero. I have a zero, and frankly, my coldest trips are going to be in the teens. I probably would have bought a 20+2 but I picked up a used 0+0 instead. I have used it into the 40s and its nice and cozy there. Haven't used over mid 40s since I have other quilts, but I believe I'd be fine as long as it was below 60 when getting in.

I don't have o/s. I would think you might want o/s based on potential low temps you might camp in, but I wonder if o/s with reduce its high temp range?

p.s. yeah, maybe the 10+2 is the ticket?

A 20+2 would be a 10 if I have it right. It is very rare for me to be at zero but like Raiffnuke and Oldbiker mentioned I could add a pad for those rare occasions. Dingbat and Dakotaross, Hammock Gear doesn't make an underquilt labeled 10 degrees otherwise that would be a consideration. They make a 40, 20 and 0 and add overfill to fine tune the temperature. It sounds like the 20+2 might be the best choice for me. Thanks for all the suggestions!

They'll make a 10° if you ask them. But with custom orders and overfill options, you really start splitting hairs. That is in addition to how warm your body is, what you ate, what you're wearing, etc.

    If you're approaching 0° just one night a year, I'd go with a 20+1 or 2oz.

If you get into the single digits on several trips, you may still be OK with a 20+2.

I just got my 0° Incubator and I'm starting to think it is overkill for what I do - maybe 6 nights/year in the winter, and they may not even be into the single digits depending on when I go.

Yes they do, or at least they did, just ask. They can only list so many options on their website without it getting confusing. A 10* incubator has approx. 2 more oz. of down and a baffle height that is halfway between the 0* and 20*. You can get overstuff or not from there.

<=== Click on my images under the user info. You will see a HG incubator 10* in multicam.

I was going through the same process as far as the temps I see. Called HG, they recommended the 10*. Perfect solution.....for me.

I don't want to speak for another's pricing policies, but from my perspective there didn't seem to be a separate "custom charge". It seemed in line with stock progression from 40* to 0*. Heck I saw someone recently post about a -15* quilt they just got from HG.
