    Hammocks in a Boyscout Setting

    Hi All-
I am a Star scout in my local boyscout troop, and i was wondering if there are any scoutmasters, who either know of any boys using a hammock or think the use of a hammock for a scout is appropriate. I am also my troops instructor, so i am allowed to tent by myself. Do you think i should or should not be allowed to use my hammock as a personal tent on troop outings. Thanks.

It's very appropriate. I am only an assistant den leader in my son's cub scout pack, but there are lots of troops in scouts that hammock. Hopefully a scoutmaster will chime in.

Go for it, as long as you have the proper gear for rain/wind protection & insulation to stay warm.

The kids & parents all looked at me a bit oddly when I first set up my hammock... Now a few of them set their own up.

I know tons of scouts and leaders hang. Dejoha aka Derek from the Ultimate Hang is involved with scouts as are a lot of other members.

I think you left out something. What does your current scout leaders think about this?
I would think their permission would be your first question you need answered before asking any advice here.

My scoutmasters think it is ok but i am wondering if it would be appropriate in the setting with the other scouts while they are in tents, i would be in a hammock

In my mind your hammock is no different than a solo tent. In both cases you are tenting alone.

In our Troop, the scoutmaster is the one who got me started hammock camping (I'm an assistant scoutmaster).
With us, the rule is, any scout can sleep in a hammock, as long as he helps the other guys with their set-up/take-down and they get to participate in his getting set up too. In other words, as long as the troop works together as a team to get it all done, and learns along the way, a main objective is fulfilled. Additionally, rigging hammocks has helped our guys learn rope-work and knots, as well as their practical application, very well.
    Good luck, have fun.

I'm the Scoutmaster of Troop #342 in Donelson, TN and every Scout in my troop has a hammock and they know how to use them. We do a hammock-only campout at least once a year and are planning more this year. Be safe and smart, know your equipment.
