Shug, shouldn't you be camping in sub zero temps or hiking some lost trail in the Linville Gorge, eating potted meat and boiling water? How can we mortals get our video fix if you're at home playing on the computer?

Aluminum arrow shafts, slurpy straws and sticks are my favorites. While many have used the CF arrow shafts, there have also been more reported failures by crushing than any other type of toggle that I recall.

I prefer aluminum arrow shafts. Like Shug says they weigh next to nothing and slide out easy. I've used sticks but when you are backpacking and it's pouring out having everything right in your kit instead of searching for sticks is priceless.

I run a loop through the middle of the shaft and hang that off my carabiner. Toggle is always right where I need it. Papa surf gave some away at a hang a few years ago, still working great today.

Use whatever you want man the weight, unless your using lead isn't going to stop you from finishing your hike. Also toggles are very easy to loose so it might not be the best idea to go spending 10 bucks on a pair of titanium space age toggles. You can find sticks that will work on the trail if you really want to save weight

Although I'm really fond of my aluminum toggles, often times we are forced to live by this philosophy. Always keep a few small sticks around.

I have used the same 3" aluminum arrow shaft pieces for over a year now with great success. Also, like Shug said they slide right out of the marlinspike.

I messed around today. I have UCR's. I drilled a small hole at one end of a toggle, threaded thru a loop of Zing-it. Then looped that onto the eye of my UCR. Toggle is then attached to the UCR, so no getting lost, right where you need it. My toggle is carbon, think I'll get some arrow shafts.

That's part of the reason why I don't want to rely on sticks.

I want something small, less weight is just a bonus. Also, I can buy a 31" aluminum arrow for $4 which will give me 10 3" toggles for 40 cents each.
