Has anybody made their own toggles? I am a boyscout and i was thinking that i can whittle a pair to use with my hammock. If you have made your own, what did you make it out of, and did any materials work better than others? I know i can just buy a set for under 5 dollars, but i enjoy the whole "diy" aspect of things

I use 1/4" solid aluminum round bar stock. This does two things for me. It gives me the needed spike in the marlin spike hitch, but it also gives me a bar strong enough to hang my hammock on if I need the extra length of tree strap. The weight cost vs hollow aluminum is minimal in my mind. Depends on if you obsess over cutting every possible gram.

I have toggles that came with "whoopie kits" that I never use. You can have them if you want. I just use sticks from wherever I hang my hammock. There are trees everywhere

I made a bunch from damaged arrows. Easton 2315 shafts cut down with a tubing cutter.

As someone already posted, find an archery shop and ask for cut offs from their arrow manufacturing process.

I just made the Hammock and suspension about 3 weeks ago. All the actual hangtime has been in the backyard so far. Like Saturday it was 72 and I took a nice nap in it. When I took it down I just took the tree straps down and tossed them on the folded hammock. What I was thinking about doing was drill a hole in one end and tie some braided line to it and the tree strap. You made a good point!

I found a fishing pole in the bushes at work today. I took it home, cut it up and who-la, new toggles. Each weight 5g. I wonder if they'll be strong enough.

+1 on the carbon fiber cutoffs, most archery stores and outdoor stores will give you a bag for free.
I personally use .30-06 shells and I, too, leave them in my straps for storage. I just stuff my straps in my sack after I stuff the hammock. Done this for years. I second the other persons thoughts about having toggles strong enough to hang from if needed

I made my toggles from carbon crossbow bolts. I think they may be sturdier since a crossbow bolt is usually slightly thicker than an arrow. I cut them down using a disk on my dremel tool and then sanded the edges a bit.

Pretty sure it's "voila." Not trying to be a stickler or anything, but thought I would help out since a lot of people have never really seen it written before.

I used an old hiking pole, just cut them to be 4 or 5 inches long, drilled a small hole at one end to put a bit of string through so as not to lose them.
took the whole of 5 minutes. have used them numerous times and no issues at all

    oh and it's definitely "voila"
All the gear and no idea.....
