    New to hanging in Kansas.

Hello, All! My name is Dan and I am a new hanger. My son and I are very involved in Boy Scouts and have been looking for additional camp methods. We know a few guys that hang who have got the idea implanted in my head. Research brought me to this site where I hope to learn a lot more.

My first hammock is a Grand Trunk purchased at the local Cabela's. While it is a nice hammock, the price point was a bit prohibitive to some of my scouts (did I mention I am the scoutmaster?). This past weekend my son and I attempted our first DIY gathered end hammock. We made it too short, so now my 10 year old daughter has a hammock. It will also probably serve as a gear sling when we camp without her. Last night we picked up more material to take another go at it. Once we get this mastered, we will be introducing the project to the rest of our troop.

Also, we are looking into different ideas for under-quilts and tarps. We want to try to use as many DIY methods as possible simply because my young scouts will get a great sense of accomplishment when they camp with gear they made themselves and to help keep costs down for them.

Any tips or advice are always welcome and appreciated.

    Dan

Welcome Dan from the PNW. Look up table cloths on the DIY forum for an easy to make hammock. I've made several ones from them. Might be able to sew up 1/2 a synthentic bag from a thrift shop and add cords to the ends for an UQ.

Tablecloth factory is your friend. Lots of 10ft nylon taffeta which should be just right for some scout projects.
    Good luck

Not too far at all. About an hours drive straight down US 77. I come that way to play slots now and then. Not so much since they opened Kansas Star in Mulvane. Maybe we will run into each someday!

What fabric type do you suggest from them? I have been buying rip stop nylon locally, but it is not really cheap($5.50/yard.) yet cheaper than commercial hammocks. Last night the ladies at Hancock Fabrics hooked us up with at 25% off coupon stacked on a 50% off coupon making our cost $2.99/yard. I wish I could count on that kind of discount every trip to their store.

EDIT -- I see now that you suggested nylon taffeta. Sorry.
