Any funny hammock stories while you were hanging out there? While living in Naples, FL a few years ago, I had two favorite places to hang my hammock in the afternoon after work everyday (I worked out of our house). One was a small park across from the boat ramp in Naples Bay that I called my bayside office. There were three palm trees there that were space perfectly apart for a hammock that gave a perfect view of the boat ramp. The other was in Rogers Park in the Old Naples area of town and I called this my downtown office. It was only about a half a block in size but had lots of shade and two perfectly spaced trees. I went there probably 3-4 times a week during the 8 years we lived there. Like many tourist areas, they have some of those open air trolleys/busses with the driver narrating a little history as they drive. Once while in my hammock at my downtown office I heard the trolley coming down the street. As they got close to the park, I heard the driver on the speaker say "And on the right is Rogers Park, and if we get lucky we'll see the guy in the hammock."

I usually go out several times with this one guy. The first time out we got the hammocks up fairly close to each other. I woke up in the middle of the night to hear the loudest snoring I have ever heard. The next time out we decided to put the hammocks up futher apart so I wouldn't hear the snoring as much, this time I took my native American flute, we both retired for the night and I layed in the hammock playing the flute, all of a sudden I hear him yell something so I get out to see what's going on. He had his knife out and thought it was some type of animal coming into the camp. I guess I'll let him know next time.

My daughter and I were Hammock camping in a place called Alcona Park, 3 hours north of Detroit and about 20 miles W of Lake Huron. Anyway I had the most vivid dream that someone had unzipped by hammock net and was looking for something inside. I woke up (?) yelling profanities and soon found that other campers nearby were turning lights on and investigating. Most embarrassing.

My wife and I were hanging in our separate hammocks but very near each other. About 2AM she wakes me by calling my name. I ask what's up and she says "something is here!". So I listen for a while and then hear the footsteps.. Something WAS here.. Between out hammocks, and others around our hammocks.. We were in the center of a herd of deer. When I looked out I couldn't count them all and simple made a loud YELP .. I may have even yelled WHOOO BUDDY!!! (In full Shug style) and they all tore off into the woods!
They came back a couple more times during the night... That's the last time we'll hang at the edge of a meadow!!!

Great stories so far!

I went last minute backpacking a few years ago in the very early Spring. It was unseasonably warm and all the snow around my home was gone. As I drove further north I started seeing more and more snow on the ground including small lakes still frozen. I had packed my threee season gear and all my winter stuff was at home. I carried on hoping the trail I planned to go on would be passable without snow shoes. After an hour of making post holes a foot deep I found a hill overlooking a 100 foot cliff that had no snow at all on it. Being a hammock camper I figured no problem. It wasn't an overly dangerous place to make camp.

While packing up the next day pround of my hammock superiority over ground dwelling I was humbled as I dropped one of my stuff sacks which proceeded to roll down the hill to the cliff. Nothing I could do as it rolled and rolled and eventually went over the cliff. About 5 weeks later I returned to that trail and my friend and I took a look to see if maybe the stuff sack didn't fall all the way down. As luck would have it it was on a small ledge just below us and my friend very foolishly retrieved it. The sack was a bit chewed but the contents were fine. Now I have merino wool long underwear that has spent more nights in Algonquin park as I have.

My second night ever using a hammock I was freaking out at about 3 in the morning. Something had walked under my hammock and it was big because it rubbed my back as it walked under my hammock slowly. It felt like being in the ocean and have something bump you. I had a pistol and a flashlight so I look out and see nothing. I thought maybe it was my buddy's dog but he was in his tent with him and his dog had a noisy collar that you could hear for miles. The next day I explain what happened and my friend tells me he let the dog out around that time. It still doesn't explain how the dog could go ninja all of a sudden. We have mountain lion and coyotes but no major predators here but its no fun to have anything brush against you at 3am.

Anyway, I went backpacking on the AT this past winter break. As we hiked to the first shelter, we saw countless amounts of bear scat all along the trail. I was beginning to wonder if we would see a bear, but I dismissed the thought since it was winter. Arriving at the shelter, I set up my hammock and tarp, and after eating some dinner and conversing around the fire, I turned in. The next morning I woke up to a noise around 6 am. It sounded like heavy breathing, and I immediately froze. I waited for the bear to poke its nose in, but when it didn't come, I realized the noise was just the wind blowing my tarp against my hammock. I'm laughing now, but it sure did scare the mess out of me.

I also learned about hanging on a slope. Felt the same superiority over ground campers, "Ah, I can hang anywhere!" Then I realized that everything I put on the ground was rolling away. Fortunately I was on show and could dig out a flat platform to hold the rest of my gear. Lesson learned.
